Hi all ,not been on this site for quite a while as had a lot going on, but wondered how others have coped with hip dilsocation,

It has totally knocked me for 6, as after so many years with multi arthritis problems, and the last 4 years been a night mare including 2 hip replacement and a very painful knee that they want to put right , my right hip was done in 2008 ,with my left hip being done 2009,
my right hip has slipped about a bit since it was done , and a bigger slip last year ,but thought it ok, ,then getting up for dinner on last night of holiday in france , just slipped out , pain was incredible . and not helped by being in france and not speaking french !
Have leg in splint to stop me using it apart from walking no bending , orig told for 3 weeks but told today by my surgeon to wear it for 3 more weeks , to help scar tissuse form to hold hip in place so avoiding an op, hence no driving , any one had similar thing, and how did you cope ?

    Hi Pam,

I haven't had hip replacements but a very elderly friend of mine had and hers dislocated. Unfortunately for her she had to wear a Derby Brace which was made of moulded 'plastic' and went from under her bust and down the leg to mid-thigh of the offending hip.

She wore it for some months and then they took it off her. A year or so later it dislocated again and she described the pain as unbearable, as you found. Due to her age they were unable to help her :( . She did have OA in her hips, knees and spine and walked very awkwardly therefore putting too much stress on her THRs. I'm sorry to say that for the last three years of her life she had to wear the Derby Brace day and night but this is an extreme and normally they wouldn't leave you in one for longer than a few months.

They decided she was also too old to be operated on. If she had have been younger they would have sent her for physio in order to build up the muscles to support the hip and maybe this is a line of enquiry you can follow with your medical team.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi Pam,

what a nightmare. I have just looked up the brace ... you must have been gutted to have to wear it for even longer. I'm confused how scar tissue will form if you can only walk on it. Are you not having physio?

I have a 13 year old THR on my left and a new resurface-replacement on the right. I have congenital dysplasia and got OA as a result. I have only experienced the pain of living with semi dislocated "real" hips ... Was it a particular incident/action that caused the slipping/dislocations? I'm 8 weeks post op and "push" the 90 degree bending rule over and above - I considered myself cautioned!

There was a post several months ago where someone thought they had a dislocation, but it turned out not to be the case. They do seem very rare. Has the consulant said why you are at particular risk?

    Speedy
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Dear Pam

I just wanted to say sorry to hear about your disaster in France .. it sounds absolutely excruciating.

I am afraid I can't give you any advice = I have recently had my first hip replacement - but just wanted to say I really 'feel' for you and hope the experts can sort you out.

Please keep posting and let us know how you get on.
