Anyone else had a steroid injection that hasn't worked?

Hi

You may have seen from previous posts that I had my first steroid injection yesterday. I am dismayed to find that 29 hours later I have not had any improvement to my joint stiffness/pain.

Has this happened to anyone else? Does it need more time to work?

Does this mean it is not inflammatory arthritis?

Hope to hear from you soon

    hi sugar,

i had one today so will let you know - generally for me though they do start having an effect the following day but my rheumy often says that they can take a few days to get in your system so hang on in there.

    Hi Sugarbuttie,

It can take a day or two, sometimes a week, to work so don't give up on it yet. I hope tomorrow you will feel difference. Cris x

Hi Berty, I have had mixed experiences with steroid jabs, some have been great and given me relief for months and others haven't worked at all. I had one in my knee a couple of weeks ago and this one worked for a couple of days then my knee flared up again. last Thursday I had a big steroid jab in bottom, this took a couple of days to work and it has helped enormously, has really settled things down. Still having some pain but nowhere near what it was before the jab, also swelling has gone down on feet, hands etc. I guess this isn't much help to you, but if you give it a bit longer, it may just help Good luck and best wishes, Brenda

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi
Sorry you are having no benefit from your steriod injection. I have had injections into the joint with no effect but the Depot ones work well. I think it's like everything else to do with arthur it works for some and not others. But if you don't try you will never know. Hoping you have a delayed effect. Fay

Hi I had my wrists injected with steroids and the doctor told me at the time that it would take about 2 to 3 weeks to benefit. Me being me got to the middle of the 3rd week and just about given up hope. Then one morning I found that the pain had gone!

So, it may take a while, but you still have a chance of it working!
    Good luck.

Hi Sugarbuttie, I've had two steroid injections, one in the shoulder and one in the bottom and neither worked for me. :( However, steroid tablets worked wonders and kept me pain free for several months.Don't know why the tablets worked and the injections didn't.Perhaps someone has the answer. Breane. :)

Hi Sugarbuttie, so sorry that you have not yet had any signs of relief from your injection. But hang on in there if you can - it may be that it just needs a bit longer to work.
    Keeping everything crossed for you...

The first one I had worked wonders for 3 days but then pain came back with avengence. The second one with double the dose did nothing so went onto tablets which worked but had side effects.

I was told that the tablets are more potent which is why they try injections first. Not sure why.

I hope you find some relief soon.

hi sugarbuttie...how are you feeling now? sometimes takes time for the injections to work.

I've had joint injections and IM injections with mixed results; sometimes great and sometimes not!... can't understand it either.

might have something to do with how much steroid they inject???

I do hope you get some relief...and please don't give up on having joint inj next time....as they can and do work! ask the doc about what he thinks.

I've just had another IM steroid inj yesterday...and hoping it will work.

I have had a few of these with mixed results. The first lot were amazing results wise but the last few have had little or no effect. Like everything else I suppose, there not for everyone. Keep plodding on though there will be something that works eventually....

    Hi Sugar,

I've had numerous steroid injections, both in my joints and in my bum, the last one was in my shoulder joint - it was a total waste of time.
I think that because I've had so many over the years, my body has become used to them and they just don't work. My rhummy doesn't bother giving them to me anymore.
I wish you lots of luck with yours and I hope it starts to help you soon.

    Take care,
    Sandra xx

No, they didn't work for me, toe joints, shoulders, elbows, Just made the joint sore for a few days until they wore off. The Doc just likes to go through a certain course of treatment even if you say it hasn't worked before.

In the bum would be a final insult!

    8) Its a grin, honest!

    Hi there

Thank you all for your replies & encouraging comments - for these I am truly thankful - you are a very kind & thoughtful bunch!

I don't know what to think of this jab......no 'instant hit', which is what I (wrongly) expected. I suppose I am less stiff & haven't taken as many painkillers these last 3 days....does this mean it has worked?

I think I expected a lot more from a first jab, that's all. I am ceratinly no worse but I am better than I was a week ago.

Hi sugarbuttie......sounds as though you've had some benefit..and if you've been able to reduce the meds that has to be good eh?

I hope it does mean its worked a bit for you Sugarbuttie, sometimes they do and sadly sometimes they don't but I know I had one in the joint in my worst lumber and thought it had done no good but slowly (when I actually thought about it) it did a bit of good. medrone is so much more effective than cortisone which is why my trigger points are now that instead. Fingers crossed for you and hopefully there will be a bit more improvement. Cris x
