Hi All
I had my appointment with doctor today and she has given me a number to call to make an appointment for a second opinion at the Wrightington, Wigan....She asked me how I was and I told her awful, the pain in this knee of mine has been chronic for a week now, even worse than just every day and I fear soon I wont be able to haul myself off the couch/chair!!!
She gave me an anti inflam called Meloxicam and told me if I found no improvement then I could also try a patch that releases morphine based painkillers......I told her I didnt care if I had to go for 5-6 opinions I needed someone to get where im coming from and how much life has changed.....I went into town today as am on me tod and walked up street and got about 20 metres and leg gave way, way walking like a lame tortoise, I neearly about turned and went back to car but carried on all the same...Would you beleive it all benches were occupied too or would have flopped on them for a break!!! Used lift in docs too....
So the crusade carries on and on and on..........

hi elaine,
glad at least that you now have the opportunity to see another consultant and hope that having to call the tel. number means that you get seen sooner.
hope too that the meloxicam helps...if not go back and speak to the doc.
let us know how you get on please,

Hi Elaine,
Well that's good news. Hope all goes well this time. You've got some will power there, to keep going when your knee went. I would have gone back to the car. Good for you.

Hi Ironic
Well I had to, was in between where I wanted to be and car so sort of stuck...Sure some woman with a pushchair wondered what the heck was up with me as I stopped dead in my tracks and let out a yelp.....
Just rung up for Wrightington, no apps at mo, they will hopefully contact me within a fortnight with one, fingers n all crossed

Hi Elaine
Sorry to hear you are in so much pain. My doc prescibed me meloxican but it doesn't seem to make any difference. The patch you mention do help though. I use them and top up with cocodamol and tramadol, but the patches certainly help to give a 24 hour cover; so necessary if the pain is keeping you awake at night.
Good luck and keep badgering them. So many hospial drs and nurses, in my experience, just don't realise how bad the pain can be and I ended up feeling that I was either some kind of junkie or a wimp for needing so much pain killer. (and i am a nurse! At least this has given me a better understanding of what its like to be the patient)
Good luck

Hi Elaine
Sorry to hear that the medical profession are not listening to you. I kept telling my GP I was getting worse on a daily basis and it was only when I insisted on new xrays which showed massive deterioration that I was sent to see a consultant. He wasn't happy about the state of my knee or the fact that I was wheel chair bound. It didn't make it easy for him when he operated either as muscle and tissue had started to grow where they shouldn't. Which meant I was in theatre a long time.
Prior to this I was struggling, like you to get around. Walking on flat surfaces, supermarkets, shopping centres used to be murder for me - it was then I realised I had to succumb to the wheelchair.
I do hope you get seen as your discomfort and chronic pain sounds very much like mine was. Just having the first TKR has made my life better. I can now walk unaided.
Let us know how you get on.

Hi Janet
Well its quirte disheartening to hear that if youre a nurse and you know what youre talking about then they still dont take you seriously at first....I think some surgeons are just plain pig headed and make up their minds about patients before they even sit in the consulting room...
Second day of meloxican and no better suppose it may take a week or so to kick in? Im frightened too that one of its side effects turns up which is oedema and I am prone to these, felt right hand side of face this morning pulsing which isnt good......I do need stronger medication I know that but must give these a try...

Hi Sharmaine
OMG...you had to become wheelchair bound virtually till they sat up and took notice? I mean do the quacks think we just make this up for the sake of it and that we like becoming less and less mobile and havving pain as your constant companion? It beggars belief...Its great however now that you can walk unaided but may I ask what age group you fall into?
I mean in this day and age with muslims getting squat style toilets in Rochdale as part of equal rights could I too claim that I am being discriminated against for being too young to need or deserve a TKR??? Extreme I know but the world now works in silly ways...
I dont want to succumb to a wheelchair not really and havent anyone to wheel me about....God!!

Hi Elaine
I am 54. However, I was never given the results of x rays that were done 8 years previously which showed OA. It was only four years ago and with a change of GP that arthur was diagnosed and by then it was bad. Just over two years ago I had to leave my job because of OA.
OA is started to take hold in other places - hands; shoulder I have it in other knee too. My GP tells me it's probably OA but won't send me for x rays. I've noticed pain in left hip too.
Life can be a struggle and it's a terrible thing to say but after these years I think I've got used to being in pain. We went on a mini cruise and I had four days without any pain - the first time in eight years it was great. Those of us with arthur have to make huge life changes as it has a big impact on how we live our lives.
You just have to remain positive - our bodies are in the hands of GPs etc and I can only hope that they treat it as they should and listen to their patients.
Have a good day and I hope you get things sorted.

Hi Sharmaine
Sorry for not replying to you earlier...Its amazing how someone who dont work can fill a day eh?
I do know what you mean by you get used to the pain but the fact of the matter has been that for most of my teens, 20's and 30's I have always accepted that my knee is a weak point and could not do certain things but I tried not to let it impact my life. However I am at present losing the fight against my condition, I know OA is worse than mine and I appreciate that but my leg is really getting worse by the week, month, etc.....I dont know what Id do if I lived alone as there would be things that would be a definite no-no....At present even getting a tin to open it, or get down to our freezer is tricky...I have days too like troday when was in Asda and my hip hurt too and I know that poor limb is compensating all the time for my dicky knee....
Its just funny how society is I think...I mean if I was an drug addict or an alcoholic I would be treated quicker and not abuse my body? How does that make sense? I know thats a sweeping statement but too often it seems to me the wrong people get the treatment they dont deserve quicker?
Havbe a good evening

Hi Elaine
I'll keep fingers crossed that they sort something out for you soon.
Having a bad knee makes life jolly hard.
Take care and enjoy the weekend.
