Mobility aids - petrol pump

Hello - hope I'm in the right place to ask. I have problems using a petrol pump. I have limited use of my hands and find squeezing the pump to be a painful process. I could pay extra to go to an attended garage or I could ask for help but I'd actually rather do it myself than admit defeat. Is there a device out there that I can use to help me with filling my car up with petrol?

Many thanks

Hi Madsouwest and welcome to the forum,

I'm sorry I don't know of any gadget which could help you. Have you looked on disability aid retailer sites to see if there's anything which can be adapted?

If it was me I'd ask for help, garages are surprisingly helpful these days, we can waste alot of precious energy being fiercely independent.

Hopefully someone else will come along with a useful suggestion.

How right you are :D I may just have to succumb to asking for help - or just send OH out to fill the car up when required. As for wasting energy, it's taken me months to get round to seeing the doc today after admitting I need to apply to the Open University of Disabled Students Allowance. Partly down to unpleasant experience with the last doctor I had to see for help and partly through reluctance to admit I need help.

Hi madsouwest, the advice that you got was good ASK FOR THE HELPI like to do things myself was so tired after trying and in pain , until I ASKED FOR THE HELP. now each time I need petrol in the can for my lawnmower the woman at the petrol pump in the office is very helpful.

people will help unless we ask for it

Hi, some ordinary garages offer a special service to the disabled. They are generally unmanned pumps but assist those who need help. They have a sticker/poster up saying if you are a blue badge holder beep your horn and they will come out and assist. Not mention of charging extra ...

You do have to ask, people who have never had a mobility issue or contact with someone with one just don't think/realise until mobility/disability affects them or someone they know. Also we are all so used to struggling - we often look very determined and as if we can manage (well so my friends tell me!!)

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

Hands high you lot! Yep, the OH has the votes, make sure they take their C/C with them!!!

Just a small point, support a smaller garage with your custom and they may take time to fill up for you, if it works, keep using them, its always nice to see a friendly face.

You will get more mpg using a Tex***o or Sh**l fuel since they have more detergent in their fuels than cheap supermarket sites, all proven by independent specialists.

    8)Its a grin, honest!

    Hi all,
Not sure about other supermarkets but at my sainsburys if you cannot manage to use the pumps etc. You can sound the horn and they come and help (or you could go in & ask/phone them prior to arriving)

know exactly what you mean, some takes ages to fill and your hand aches...
perhaps we should all put notes on what company pumps have quick filling nozzles...there are some but cant remember which company.

I will be asking when I go to fill up at my local supermarket .... because there are times when I am ok with the pump and times when I would not be .... so it will pay to know what to do!

as for gadgets - never seen one yet ..... I use the hubby too :lol::lol:
