Hi

I'm very wary of kneeling on my new knee. If you've had a TKR can you kneel in comfort? Looking forward to hearing your views.

Kneeling is the only thing that I can`t do happily with my new knee Sharmaine. I have to say that I CAN kneel, but it doesn`t feel comfortable at all, so I tend to avoid doing so........Ange.

Well no I dont think you can...My dad had his done last June and he has occasionally knelt on it by mistake and the says it is the most horrible feeling ever, you know you cant do this for longer than about 10-20 seconds.....I have always thought it was well known that you can do lots with a new knee but kneeling on it is out of the question....

Just my opinion and my dad and sister (who has also had TKR) done who have said, others may disagree...

I`ve just remembered - senior moment sorry! - my surgeon telling me that I wouldn`t be allowed to scrub any more floors. I told him that wouldn`t be a problem, as I didn`t anyway!......Ange.

    Hi Sharmaine,

this is interesting timing!! I was looking up on the web today about kneeling after a hip op ... and interestingly a lot of the info that came up was about knees !!! (Even though that wasn't what I was searching for!) Anyway here is a link for you about it:

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi Speedy

Thanks for this..... I may start giving it a go - I tried a few weeks ago and it was jolly uncomfy! Interesting stats and it's something I wish they had mentioned whilst I was in hospital.

    Hi Bertyboy

I did a lot of kneeling in my youth particularly during Lent and the other catholic stuff. I'm sure it didn't help the knees or the jogging I used to do in my 20s. I haven't been to church in a long time if I did I would be in confession for at least two years. I couldn't even recall all the sins!!:lol: I, however, try to be a good person despite my failings with regards to regular worship.

    Hi elaine

Have you inherited arthur from your dad? My mum and brother both have OA in their knees. I tired to get some things out of the bottom cupboard and it took me about ten minutes to get up again.

    Hi angel

When I have tried to kneel it has felt uncomfortable I could feel the metal pressing against my muscle etc.

I don't kneel on my TKRs, have tried and don't like it.

If you are going to try it I suggest you put a cushion under your knee first or better still kneel on the sofa or your bed.

    Hi Sharmaine

I am able to kneel. I do not make a habit of it but I have on occasion knelt when looking in a cupboard so as to save my back and when washing the kitchen floor. Usually I use a mop for the latter. I do not find it particularly uncomfortable. Hubby has recently bought me a pair of knee protectors as I wished to kneel in the garden, either cutting the edges of the grass with shears or kneeling to weed. They are very comfortable. I have only used them twice so far. I am not able to kneel and then sit back with my bum on my heels though!!! I do not get up too elegantly either!!

I have a vague recollection my surgeon said I would not be able to kneel but he also told me that I would not get as good a knee bend as I have, either ............ :)

I see him at the end the month for my 6 month check so will try to remember to ask him about kneeling and if he took my knee caps away (which I do not think he did) as Berty was asking about that in a thread a little time ago.)

    Luv
    Elna x

    [Hi Linda

I'll try kneeling with the cushion. OH has to clean out lower cupboards, fridge and freezer - I just can't do it because it requires me to be nearer the floor. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Hi Elna

I've tried a couple of times since my posting and it feels really weird.
I may invest in some knee pads. I have to mop the floor these days - I used to love getting on my hands and knees to do it because you get into the corners easily. OH does it for me now and again.

I did ask about my knee cap and they didn't remove it. It was one of the things I was interested in. In fact if you ask to see your x rays - you can see it.

Good luck with your six monthly check up. How are you doing these days? For the past six weeks I no longer need the perching stool - I only use it if I'm really tired. Initially I found standing painful. I've been feeling great these past couple of months. I have this problem with my shoulder which I hope they're going to sort out - I'm still waiting for a letter to see the specialist.

It's been great to be out in the garden. OH has made me a couple of raised beds for veggies. I was in my element this year as I planted onions, potatoes etc.

Lovely to hear from you Elna!!!

    Hi Elna,

I was unable to sit back on my heels when kneeling after my first THR and am the same again this time round.

Is the degree of knee bend necessary to kneel and sit back mechanically possible or a definite no-no for an artificial knee joint?

The reason I ask is because I achieved the sitting back on heels very gradually by putting cushions between my bottom and my heels and gradually reducing the number of cushions until one day I was sitting on my heels. However, hips are different of course.

    Hi Speedy

I have a feeling that with "artificial" knees it is probably impossible to sit back on one's heels. I find that I get so far and it is most uncomfortable and painful so I will not persevere with that one! Being able to kneel is good enough for me. You are doing extremely well, keep up the good work! :D
