Had my usual bloods done at the drs and my esr is on 83 from 31 and i have been having quite a lot of pain. Went to see the specialist and he requested some other tests one was called E GFR test and wanted to ask what this test is for as i have googled it and it comes up with looking for cencerous cells and then another place said its to check the kidneys but i thought the renal test checked the kidneys.

The pain through the night it horrid at the moment I cant understand why the flare up now im usualy ok during the warmer months. Its also hard work getting into a car as a passenger as i struggle to get my left leg in and have to sort of pull it in by grabbing my trousers its so embarrassing

Hope everyone else is feeling as well as can be.

Hello justinbarrow, sorry to hear you are under the weather. It does sound like a flare if your ESR has risen so abruptly. What is your CRP and what meds are you on? What type of arthritis do you have? How often do you have your blood tests? Are you having to physically lift your leg due to the inflammation or are your muscles on the weaker side of things?

I never google anything: I'm not a doctor and I don't know what stuff means! I know that anti TNF stands for anti-tumour necrosing factor - TNF is present in the bloodstream in some patients with RA and PA, but it doesn't mean tumour like cancer tumour. Tumour has more than one medical meaning. I have PA and I take humira, methotrexate, oral steroids and pain relief of various types. I too am flaring at the mo - and foul it is. My CRP is 1, my ESR 4, but despite this pain levels are high and have always been so. I have had figures in the 170s before now, 83 is uncomfortable but manageable. I wish you well. DD

Thanks - I have my blood done once a month and have rhumotoid arthritis and ankilosing spondylitis. My leg is more muscle weakness with pain. When i was examined he dr held my leg slightly raised then asked if i could hold it myself...i couldnt. He obviously was looking at something as he then put a bit of pressure on the top of my leg and asked if i could try and lift it again but i couldnt but my muscles started trembeling slightly.

Im sure things will get better just wish it was sooner than later but I suppose this is what the condition does act like a volcano then all of a sudden just errupt.

    Thanks for your replies :D

    Hello

It sounds like a flare but hopefully you will only have to ride it out for a wee while.

Positive thoughts that it is a short one.

Monthly bloods are regular but will not necessarily pick things up as they occur - thanks to humira I'm stuck on fortnightly bloods - bore chore they are too! I know nothing about AS or its treatment. I still do the exercises my physio recommended after my first synovectomy in 02, they do help to keep my muscles in reasonably good shape. They are just simple isometric ones but they help - try some for a month and see if they improve your muscle tone. I wish you well. DD

    Hi Justin

Not having a great time then :(

You knew the bloods were likely to be up didnt you if you had been feeling in more pain.

I do hope that things settle down for you soon and this flare is short-lived :)

    Love Toni xx

Hi Justin, sorry you are in such pain at the moment with your flare up. I don't know about AS but I do know that there is no rhyme or reason with RA - it just goes ahead and does its own thing. anyway.

Really hope it passes before long.

    Thinking of you.

    Love Tilly x
