Hi Just wondered if there is anyone who could recommend a Excercise dvd where the person is sat in a wheelchair. I am starting to feel abit depressed about certain areas of my body. I think watching a dvd will help motivate as long as the excercises are not too hard as my mobility is limited . Thanks for any suggestions as this is a hard one. I have searched all over the web.

    Do you have Sky tv?

If so, I have noticed on the fitness channel 282 a programme called Chairobics. Next one on is at 2pm today. I've never watched it so don't know if suitable for you or not.

Perhaps, PF, she is as flexible as that 'cos she has done the exercises for a while. Fingers crossed it works for you. How's your Friday going? Despite ongoing misery I have agreed to sally forth to the pub with The Husband for a restorative pint. He has his miseries (work) and needs cheer. Bottoms up! (or as an Arabic friend once put it, when trying to be very British, 'Up your bottoms, my friends!' ) DD

Make a note of everything, my lovely pinkflamingo, and don't go only on what you think is relevant. Everything counts, no matter how small or how big, it all matters and adds up to the bigger picture. The problem is, is that when you live with something day- in, day-out, you adjust and forget just how abnormal 'normal' for you becomes. Well, b***er me, I've just eaten a whole, LARGE, bar of Galaxy caramel. Crikey. Time for a cuppa. DD

    Hi DD :)

Yes you are quite right we do adjust to the way of life that arthur wants us to. How we go about day to day ventures best we can.
I don't really realise what I am like until I see other people. I like to people watch from a cafe and find it amazing how easy they walk, hold a cup or cut up their meals. I do sometimes envy them
Will make a list and take it with me in sept because after all the years at another hosp I feel as though this could be a new start.
A bit late but hey if they can help.
Hey why didn't you hand round the choc. Will have to go and find some in me fridge ,I am too ready for a coffee.
    love Julie PF xxx :):)

I know exactly what you mean about looking at other people. I marvel at how quickly they walk, how they obviously don't feel any pain, how they can carry all manner of things with ease 'cos they're not juggling with crutches, how couples walk along, hand-in-hand ('cos one of 'em isn't on crutches) and I think . . . . . .one day, you lot . . . . . one day . . . . . . . Then I wave my arthritis wand VERY VERY hard (and one day the b***er will work and then they'll find out.) Ooooh. Where did that come from? I'm off to the pub again. The Husband wants to talk to me. Ooooops. DD

Hi Julie, I know what you mean about watching others and being amazed by what they do, I'm not as challenged as you but I still do it. Thing is none of them realise what they have got and won't until they get an injury/illness.

Let us know when your DVD arrives and how you get on. It doesn't matter that you aren't as flexible as the woman on the DVD - no one is as flexible/able as the person leading the class ... as long as you attempt what you can and improve on your own performance - then that is more than you were doing before and can only be a good thing.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi Speedy,,
No people don't realise but I am ashamed to say I too was probably one of them people before arthur arrived. I was 25 when he latched on to me.
Will give you a update on how I go on with Dvd, . It has been despatched and due date 12th. Day after surgery
Will still have a go though if I can :)

I was definitely one of them when younger. I have reasonably long legs and I used to walk so quickly - I would be impatient with slower walkers, getting in my way. I would never say anything rude or push them over -! - but I would feel inconvenienced and tut to myself. Oh have I learned my lesson. People are unfailingly polite to me, they move out of the way when they see me blundering towards them, crutches whirling and glinting in the sun, like some sort of ghastly beetle-type bug, tottering along. Hi :)

About this dvd, It is a really fun work out but not for me.

There are a couple of things i can do but my arms are constantly bent so cant reach above my head, and alot of the excercises focus on doing this. I just kept my arms at a low level and tried to work my waist.
The girl in the vid has no pain (i am glad for her).
I will probably give the dvd to my mum I am sure she could do it especially as she can sit down. It certainly gets yer heart pumpin. Just took a paracetamol as I know I am gonna now suffer.
Thank you moogiemouse for the suggestion glad I bought it,.
My head says go but the body says NO  love julie :)

Is there any way you can adapt the exercises to suit you? It might trigger some ideas for you to develop a programme that fits your needs. Don't feel downhearted, get this week out of the way, get all of that sorted, then come back to it with fresh eyes and a new perspective. The girl in the vid was probably off her head on morphine anyway! Chin up chuck, you made the effort to find out, and that shows intelligence and comittment - committment - commitment - oh hell, determination! DD

I know you are in turmoil, my lovely pf. Wish I could do something to help but I don't know what. Personally I'd take you up the pub for a bit of a sesh and a giggle, but that's impossible! You know we are thinking of you, we'll be there in spirit - hell, some of us are with you already. Does it help to talk about it, or is ignoring it the best way with you? DD

PS 'sesh' is our friends' shorthand for session

Hi joan, Glad that your sis has found something to help keep her fit. The rowing mach will give her lots of upper body strength. My problem is I have no strength and hands wont grip. I will do bits of the dvd next week. just takes time i guess.
Got to get in shape for my daughters wedding next april.
    love julie :)

Would love to go out to the pub DD , I am quite funny when I get tipsy, Not that it happens much. Don't like the morning after.

I don't mind talking about anything , and yes it does help I just don't want to bore everyone by doing so. As I have said it should only be a day job but they tell you to ring first, take a gown and all your meds. Why is that. I would just like to sit in a waiting room I don't want a bed. I don't like the fact that I am awake and can hear what they are saying. That was my option so I could go home same day. Well I won't come on forum tomorrow I will get prepared. I will take you all with me on wednesday and I will let you all know when I am out.

    Hi Julie,

when I had my op I was admitted to a day ward and we all had chairs to sit on and wait on for our op. (Unlike you I wished it was a bed -I'd been really late to bed the night before, packing/having my last bath for weeks/washing my hair and then hadn't slept a wink...) Staying in patients moved to a ward after and day patients ... well I don't what they had after bed/trolley/chair??? Probably depended on whether they had a GA or local.

Did the exercise DVD have music to exercise too? Did you like it? If so, then in a few weeks I would see if you can adapt the exercises to suit you. Alternatively - you could challenge a physio, pilates/yoga teacher, trainer at a local gym to devise you a programme ... they would be able to look at what you can do and what your limitations are and you could explain what you are trying to achieve ... could be fun. Could ask your GP or consultant if they can recommend someone. Or perhaps is there a local para-olympic group that train near you - they would have coaches experienced in capitalising on what you can do ... Or maybe I way off the mark here - in which case just ignore.

    Speedy
