How effective are the knee support products?

Dear all,

My mother, in her 50s, is diagnosed to be suffering from osteoarthritis. The pain is on her right knee, and is subject to the weather.

Basically, whenever the weather becomes damp or it is becoming cold, she feels pain in her knee. It makes it difficult for her to walk up the stairs.

I heard about some knee products, like this website:

http://www.footorthotics.co.uk/products/bodymedics/knee-supports-products.html

Has anyone tried these? How effective are these products?

My sincere thanks,

    Wow...The prices of those........

I do use joint supports.....I have RA, and find them very helpful........

The ones I use cost 1/4 of those prices.......and are comfortable to wear all day.......

    Hi

Yes - they do seem very expensive .. I think I have seen cheaper ones advertised, but I'm afraid I don't know how effective they are..

Hi robertls, could you pls tell me more about your joint supports?

Is there a web link so that I can see and buy them?

Sorry if I sound naive, but this is new to me, so I don't know much about different products.

    Thank you.

I used to use knee supports and found them helpful. I bought neoprene ones from my local chemist and would use them when walking. One can come to rely on them too much, causing your muscles to become lazy. Unfortunately now due to swelling my knees are too fat, even for the XL size. Look in your chemist and see what they have, and remember to measure your mum's knee/s carefully! I hope you can find some that help. DD

I'm been advised I can reply using trade names.

I use Thermoskin http://www.thermoskinproducts.co.uk/ Supports which I bought from Cox and Robinson Chemist http://www.cox-robinson.co.uk/ , in Leighton Buzzard for around £6.50 about six months ago. They have really helped me ....

They do supports for all parts of the body, and several types.....
I used the cheapest ones, and can wear them for long periods without discomfort.......

    Hope this helps.......

The neoprene ones also keep joints warm, which may also help. I wish you and your mum well. DD

Hi, Its a long time ago, but I had an injury to my knee and I bought a support similar to the ones in the pictures. I only wore it when I played Badminton, (Show's how long ago that was, about 10 years)! It did seem to help support the knee and I would have less pain the next day. I've still got them!!! I have splints for my OA in my hands and I only wear them when I'm watching TV or resting and then only for an hour or so, as the OT told me you can weaken the muscles by too much support.

Has your Mum thought of going to the doctors and seeing if he will refer her to the Occupational Health department, then she would get the right fit and type to help her withour the cost.

Dear all, I forgot to ask you. Should the person wear the wrap all day? In other words, how many hours per day should my mum wear this?

BTW, my mum has retired early because of her health.

    Thank you.

I dont wear mine all day..

Whenever I go out for a 'shamble', (Cant call it a walk anymore)

    Or a bit of gardening..

I went to Cox & Robinson this morning....

The barcode for a small knee support was 09580-83608

    Cost £5.99

    Skin coloured

They do a different one for £16.99....I tried one..............for me, the cheaper one worked much better...

    Hope this helps......

Hi, I've checked Cox & Robinson but unfortunately, there is no store nearby.

Therefore I think I will order directly from Thermoskin. At Lloyds, they only sell the Small Size, while it seems my mother needs a medium one.

    Thanks again.
