Hi, i was on Amitriptyline a few years ago and i had similar symptoms but also felt really depressed. When i went back to the pain clinic about 6 weeks later they changed me on to Nortrypiline and i have been on this now for 4 years.
I take this in the morning as if i take it at night i cant sleep. I only take 10mg (sometimes 20mg) and it doesnt effect my performance on a daily basis.
Hope this helps.
I was prescribed Nortryptiline for migranes and take 60mg straight after my evening meal but it does leave me very groggy in the morning and very dry mouthed but at least I don't get the migraines!!!0 -
Hi
I've been on these for a few years now. I take two a night but when I'm really bad can take 3. This feeling will pass. Just remember to take them 2-3 hours before bad. I made the mistake once of taking these during the day and it made me feel like hell!
They are a powerful relaxant.
You will find your mouth gets very dry. I find using a mouthwash just before bedtime helps - something like cordosyl which is alcohol free - dilute it with water. Leave a glass of water by your bed because you will need to keep your mouth moist.
Regards

Hello.
I can truly sympathise with your problems with "Amy-Ts". I am guessing your GP has started you on the lowest dose first? I do hope so as the effects of higher doses given at the onset of treatment can be very counter-productive.
I often felt that taking this med is best done an hour or two before you go to bed. The principle idea of it is to help you relax your mind and body and hopefully get a reasonable nights sleep. This drug is an old-fashioned antidepressant given a new lease of life.It can take up to a month before all the immediate side-effects finally clear and thus making the drug more effective for long-term use. When I first had mine,I slept for 15 hours straight off something I hadn't done for some years!
The side-effects do eventually wear off so perseverence is the key to making it work. Its very important to read the leaflet from beginning to end which comes with the pills. Its also important to re-read it from time to time.As always you will need regular check-ups whilst you're on this medication to make sure its suitable for you in the long-term.
Once the horrible side effects have gone, you should find you sleep better, feel more refreshed and possibly a little less irritable once its bedded in.I do wish you well and hope that the short-term problems you've got will go to give you the long-term relief you clearly need.
All the very best from a fellow user.

I've been on amitriptyline 25mg x 3 every evening for a few years now, and take them around 9pm with my other medication for arther and other medical problems they do work but it does take time I also take gabapentin for nerve pain for my SMA ( spinal muscular atrophy) a form of lower motor neurone diesease) and I do find dry mouth to be a problem but Metformin i take also does that to me, all the water I drink does help with rehydration which makes me feel drowsy if i dont drink enough, I think if you can carry on for a while it should settle but mention the problems to your Dr, try taking them and drink a large glass of water before bedmaybe it will help like it does me, Good luck0
