Osteotomy

Hi All
Whilst I was clearing out some stuff in my documents on the computer I found a letter replying to my local hopsital where I had complained about a doctor who saw me in 2008 regarding my knee.
Now at the time my leg wasnt as bad as it is now, indeed I was working for CPS and running up and down 5 flights of stairs 3 times a day and kneeling on my knee quite a lot, I was also about a stone and a half lighter than now. Anyway to cut a long story short this doctor bascally had no clue what joint it was, asked "how was my hip", called me Mrs and kept flicking through my notes like a kid with a phone directory asking me "how long ago you had surgery please". His manner was awful, I complained, they pulled ranks and basically made it sound like the perfect appointment. In their letter replying to me it said he had discussed the option of osteotomy and at the time I had never heard of this (indeed have only just looked it up and it sounds more like a builders/lecci's job what with circular saw n wires!). The truth was he never even mentioned it to me which I replied to hospital.
My point where im going with this is how come nobody ever mentioned this again and only the kneecap removal. I suppose it makes me wonder if my optins really are that limited. I wonder should I ask about this in Sept? But it sounds a big op too..
Any thoughts be appreciated as per...

Each doctor has his/her favourite procedure. That's all I can think of. They cannot remember everything, sometimes the patient has to put forward suggestions. We know we are individuals: to them we are one of many. I know nothing about this op, sorry. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi Elaine,
I had osteotomies on my hips as a child and was "on the books" for a "periacetabular osteotomy" on my right hip as an alternative to a hip replacement. I only know about the hip version of osteotomies - the benefit is you keep your original bone/joint the disadvantage was it is a long recovery and a "big" op. My hip suddenly deteriorated and I was unable to have it done and had a resurface-replacement instead. The recovery from this has been more manageable in my circumstances - so perhaps it was a blessing in disguise ...
I think you should mention it to the consultant. Explain it was written in correspondence following a consultation in 2008 ... and ask if it is still feasible and if so what the pros and cons are. No harm in asking and if you don't you will always wonder "what if."
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
HI Speedy
Well I can only go with what Ive read on net but it sure as heck seems a big op what with the circular saw and wires being mentioned! Still I suppose any op when a joint is wearing out is going to be biggish isnt it?
I may mention it at my app.....Think I have an uphill struggle though cos even back in 2008 they were trying to send me away with no treatment and keeping quiet.
