Sarah and I went to see my Mother in Ireland a couple of months ago -just went for one night so only one piece of hand luggage each and yes ladies a handbag is a piece of hand luggage. So because of the strict restrictions of a certain Irish airline I measured both our bags and weighed them so they were 'legal' hand luggage. At Birmingham airport our bags were searched and my new tin of deodorant was considered a risk as it contained too much fluid and was taken from me (not before I had a good spray and had offered the same to all the other passengers!!). So going we were fine and dandy. Unfortunately I forgot about the 'Grandma factor' for our return trip. Mother had bought Sarah loads of 'bits an bobs' and insisted we took them home. Also my birthday pressie - a very nice and weighty leather handbag. My sister was a bit put out when I said I loved my pressie from her but couldn't possibly take that winter weight full length dressing gown in my rucksack. Well with all the extras from Mother including the bag full of English pennies our bags were to say the least a bit bigger than when we first arrived. When we got to the departure gate I told Sarah she would have to wear her back pack through the gate. As she stood up and put the offending article on her back she wobbled and then fell backwards with the weight. I half carried her back pack behind her and when it got to our turn to go past the crew who were stood next to a sign saying 'Bags that do not fit in this guide will be charged for £35.00 or they will not be allowed aboard'. I gave my most dazzling smile (LOL) and gave Sarah an almighty push to get through and then I hobbled in my best Quasimodo style to catch her on the other side of the gate because I knew that if she fell over we would need a block and tackle to lift her upright again!!
Moral of the story wear 2 of everything and have empty bags for the Grandma factor!!
