STEROIDAL PSYCHOSIS

Hi everyone. Is there anybody out there who has suffered a bout of steroidal psychosis. I have PA and was given a steroid injection in my left knee to improve pain and reduce inflammation. I have had several steroid injections in the past without problems. On this occasion , I experienced feelings of elation, prolonged periods of high energy and sleeplessness followed by what could be described as a complete nervous breakdown. I was "Sectioned" under the mental health act and spent several weeks in hospital.Whilst in hospital receiving treatment(in an improved condition),I read an article on the side effects of steroids. The upshot was I was diagnosed with steroidal psychosis. This period of illness brought about an immense amount of stress on my family life which nearly cost me my marriage and family. Has anyone else experienced similar symptoms. On asking the nursing staff within the mental health unit if they noticed a large amount of people with joint problems requiring their services , the answer was a resounding "YES" . Anyone else out there experienced similar please comment. Aidan

Hi Aidan,
Welcome to the forum, tis a good place and they are a good lot here.
I think you were very unlucky but so glad you have had some decent help and are much better now. I have had many steroid jabs but so far they have never affected me like that. When I was on preds I did have sleeplessness, and I get it with the pregabalin but the rest thankfully I haven't had.
I am sorry you have had this reaction and well done for getting yourself to recover. I really hope its sorted now? I guess you wont be able to have more steroid jabs now? Its made me think cus that's a side effect they never mention.
I know any long term condition can lead to depression and maybe that's what the ward staff were meaning? You really have been so unlucky and I hope it was a one off. Nice to meet you. Take care Cris x0 -
Hi Aiden
Just popped in to say Welcome to the Forums.
I'm on Prednisolone but have had many Depo Medron injections. I have also had injections in the joints.
Well as you can see what the time is and I'm still going through many sleepless nights.
I can sympathize with you and how you feel.

Hi tiatodd1, I too have PA and have had steroid injections in both knees and a couple of depos. I am also taking 12.5mg daily or oral steroid. I have never had such a reaction but this drug is a contrary one: sometimes it's effective, other times it does nothing, or apparently it can send one on a very peculiar journey. Apart from the daily treatment (3 years now and counting, but nothing higher than 20mg per day) my injections have been well-spaced, at least six month between each one. Perhaps having things too close together could contribute, I don't know as I ain't a medic, but could that have been a factor? There is also the issue of a reaction to it that no-one can forecast - from reading up on these things I think steroids are prone to causing that. I am so sorry that it happened, I hope that things are resolved for you now, that things are settled with your family and that you are feeling OK. I wish you well. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

HI Tiatodd and welcome to the forum,
What a nightmare experience for you and your family.
I have never had this treatment, so have no experiences to relate.
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
WOW that was scary Aidan thanks for sharing I bet you are scared to change any medication now for a long time.0
