    Hi,
I have RA but as far as I know heat pads can help and try some of the Anti-inflam gels. Others prefer ice packs or alternate hot/cold.
I'm afraid it's try and see if it works for her.

I dont know about exercise I would wait to hear from the more knowledgeable to come along.

Sorry she is having problems though.

    Take care,

    Ix

thanks for all the replies, valval and ironic we think the swimming and the need to see the physio are the best ways to go at the moment and maybe the dual tens machine if the pain gets to bad, anyway thanks again :):):)

    Hi there Ivor! :D

How are you doing, still making the world go round with the post?

I am sorry to hear about your wife - I had both knees replaced eventually but I hope she is nowhere near having to make any decisions like that. Exercise is good done moderately to keep the muscles strong. Cycling, walking and swimming are the best. Physio may help as do painkillers and anti inflammatories prescribed by the gp. I used to like using a heated wheatbag (heated in microwave), some people like ice, but not me. (Icing can bring down any swelling of the knee and also numbs any pain for a while.) Do not put ice direct onto skin though, but I expect she knows that.

Lovely to hear from you and hope life is treating you gently.

    Luv

    Hi Holmsi

    Good to see you :)

Anti-inflams as well I think as the other tips she is going to try.... for a week or so.

Hope she is ok :( and has she seen the GP?

HI Holmsi, I agree with the swimming, physio, heat/cold and gels. The other thing that really worked for me when my knees were very swollen (OA) and that was cabbage leaves!! An old wives tale, supported by science and it worked for me. I was so desperate that when my friend suggested it I tried it. Apply a cabbage leaf to the knee and keep it in place overnight with tubigrip bandage. (Some folks soften the leaf briefly in the microwave first) - worth a try for swelling - works for some not for others.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi holmes :D

I find applying heat is the best for me with any sore joints.

I put a soft pillow under my knees in bed as they don't straighten out any more and it's painful to leave them adrift.... the pillow allows them to be supported and me to sleep!

    hope all the suggestions help!

nice to see you posting. :D

Hope the cabbage leaves help your poor knees Babycham.... My friend who recommended it to me said her old Mum swore by them, I was dubious but desperate! I think her Mum wore them day and night - but I didn't think I could really turn up at work/go out smelling of cabbage ... and just at night worked for me. Fingers crossed.
