Having 4 bars on the wireless connection means that the WiFi link from your computer to the router is OK, not that the router to the exchange phone line is any good. I presume that the line light is the one flashing, if it is:alanmancunian wrote:Livinglegend
Have you any ideas why the internet light on my O2 router is flashing. I phoned O2 up and they said it was the telephone extension lead up the stairs, which is old. ( could be an excuse ). l have 4 bars on the wireless connection, and it still does work, but Iv'e noticed it's a bit sluggish, and working to say 80%.
I'm pretty sure this light should be constant.
Any ideas. Thanks Alanmancunain
Firstly, go to http://www.pingtest.net/ which will test your phone line connection to the router and tell you of any problem with the line/extension. If you get an A or B then you are OK, anything less could most likely be a line fault. Actual download speeds can be checked at http://www.speedtest.net/index.php both are free to use.
The easy way to check the extension, is to plug the O2 box directly into the main BT socket, if the line light comes on permanently and doesn't flash, then it is most likely a fault somewhere on the extension. If so, look carefully for any kinks, places where it can get trapped or tripped over, (no-one will ever say, "I tripped over that"), and any clips or nails pinching the cable, as this can damage the thin inner wires.
If it is a 'plugged in' extension then gently waggle, remove and replace all the plugs several times to clean the contacts, don't do anything else as this does the job best. If you have any phones plugged into the extension, check the plugs on those as it can lead to a noisy line. Check especially the multiple and ADSL filter connectors as mine sometimes play up and don't forget the plugs on the line cable into the router.
If the extension is 'permanently' wired, then turn off and unplug the O2 box, take the covers off the BT phone boxes and check the tightness of the extension connection screws as these can become a little loose in time. Securely replace all the covers, then waggle all the plugs as above, before reconnecting and starting up the box.
Anything more and you need an expert to look at it and sort it for you.
