sick of sittinga round so saw my physio who suggested I take up walking on grass instead of the roads I used to
said I might still get some pain the next day ..and he was right ..so took some paracetamol and tramadol
but glad I went
anyone else tried walking on more friendly ground ?
did about 6 laps of the local sports fields
going to get out my map and find a s many as I can locally now ..drive there ..walk ..then home for a nap

Hi BB,
Nice to see you.
I d a lot of grass walking.... but mine is uneven and most of it has a slope in it so its not as easy and does make the hips and knees kick a bit but my feet prefer it less I trip or find a sort of hole... foxes or badgers!
Walking ids gentle exercise and well done for persevering. Cris x0 -
Hi Bluebeard,
I much prefer walking on grass - a much more forgiving surface than tarmac.
Not dry sand though - that is twice as hard work and last time set my hip off. The wet sand where the waves lap on the beach is ok though.
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -

its 50 percent less stress on my ankle according to psyhio
miss my long country lane walks ..but life goes on xx0 -
Hi BB,
Is it really 50%? I used to pound the streets to earn a bit of money and pounding the fields really is much easier on my feet. Cris x5Hey some lanes have nicely trimmed hedges and bits you can walk on so you never know......Mine don't but should have... can you start a strimmer?0 -
Grass is the preferred option for me. Tarmac is OK but long, romantic strolls along sandy and/or pebbly beaches are a thing of the past. Grass certainly lessens the impact on one's bones! DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi Cris, it will be the lumps and bumps and slopes on your fields. Smooth grass is fine but any deviation is a big problem for me too.
Careful of the dog mess all you grass pounders....

Hi BB,
Yes I could see that walking on grass would be a great deal better. That with the insoles will make life more interesting as you say. Looks as if you are planning to get going with the swimming etc.
Hope you enjoy your new found freedoms and steady build up of stamina.

You know what I found a suprising comfort ~ that soft tarmac bouncy stuff they put on the childrens playgrounds.
Now obviously Im not saying you should go doing laps around the kids park (might get some funny looks  ) but it was great for me taking my boys to the park knowing it was easier on my feet0 -
Grass walking is definately less of a strain and did you also know that walking on slightly uneven ground (grassy parks for instance) improves your balance and stamina..Our worst times are always our best lessons.0

apparently running on roads puts 3 times you body weight on the ankles and knees
walking is one and a half times
and a softer surface half that of walking on roads0 -

I agree grass is much easier!..... but you only need to do a fraction of the distance if you are walking on sand!....but its really good for cardio vascular fitness .! looks lovely feels difficult *CB*0

Hi Elizabeth,
Only half of here is flat... and there are fox digs and badgers digs as well I walk like a drunken gorilla but the long grass isn't too easy either ((( ))) xx
Hi BB,
Its incredible that its that much  I shall make a note to stick to grass if possible then. Cris x0 -
hi did not know this strange the thing one learns on line found from experiance that grass better for my joints go to watch boys play football on sundays and walk around the pitch being good mother and getting exercise lol and lovely views from most pitches around here lolval0

It must be something to do with turf being 'springy' ie it has a bit of give in it. Good idea valval - cheer them on and get some exercise for yourself - be a sweetie and do a lap for me please!
skezier - thrid belly-laugh of the day thanks to you - do you really walk like a drunken gorilla? What a picture you paint with your words. I'm like an insect - stag beetle I guess, large and clumsy. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0
