Job Application Worries

Hi All
I posted a couple of weeks ago re a job i had applied for and the closing date wasnt till 6 Sept.....I had ticked the box so thought should be at least entitled to an interview.....Its now the second day and no call has been received and am thinking now maybe my fears were compounded.
If i dont get an interview are they not playing by the book? Can I call the personnel and ask why i didnt even get an interview...Surely its discrimination if i dont even get over first hurdle...This is what i mean about people thinking disabled applicants get an easy ride...IE guaranteed interview, good reason needed not to give person the job (this is what ive been told so far)....I dont think people realise how hard it is getting a job never mind having a disability to declare also......
So much for having worked there last year and them saying i was an excellent employee......?

hi elainesbadknee
sorry you haven't heard about a job interview, could you not just give it another couple of days as the closing da was monday.
If not i don't suppose it would hurt to ring and ask if the position has been filled.
Hope you find out soon

Hi
I was wondering if they had had the closing date then they would need a day or two to shortlist, then send out letters for interview?
I hope you hear something soon xx

Hi Elaine, slow down, the applications all had to be in by Monday ... some were still being opened on Monday ... then a group of "managers" had to meet and sit down and read and sort through the applications ... they might have wanted to check references etc at this point too ... then they have to decide who to ask for interview, work out an interview schedule, write to people to come for interview, get those in the post, the postie has to sort and deliver those envelopes ...
But, no harm in calmly and cheerfully ringing the place and saying you have filled in an application form etc etc and when are they sending out the interview letters/are you on the list for an interview etc? Be nice! You can tell them their system stinks once you have the job!!

I'm an impatient person too (except with S and kids of course) so, this is advice from one impatient person to another .... :?:I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -

Hi Elaine
People apply for hundreds of jobs and get no acknowledgment of their letters, let alone an interview. Are you saying that you are entitled to an interview? You have every right to phone in should you wish but I would leave it a few days yet.

Hi Elaine.
I'm a bit puzzled about the interview, what box did you tick that would guarantee this?
As Elna says it is very rare to get an acknowledgement letter these days. I know as my OH lost his job and has applied for hundreds of jobs and has only had about 12 letters back.

Hi elaine
I know you will, but try not to worry.
I agree that Monday was the closing date - At social services when i was a social worker we had to wait another two days incase of postal delays (equal ops) then the whole panel had to shortlist and the whole panel had to set up interveiw dates
I think next week is more feasible.
You'd better get an interveiw or I will go and fump 'em!!

Hi Speedy

They get references after they employ you i do know that and then phone shortlisters for interview....
I hate waiting..

I am going by what the jobcentre related people told me to tick the box saying i have a disability and that by law they should at least interview otherwise some may see it as disrimination....
I know hundreds of people apply for jobs and get no acknowledgement...I am entering unknown and alien territory here as never applied whilst had long term health issue.

Hi Toni
Suppose i just would like to know either way and even when have applied for jobs in past always request feedback etc........
I know i meet the criteria as did the job last year and got told any application from myself would be welcomed so just worrying that thats all a load of bull!!!
Thanks for the offer of fumping......LOL

I don't think they open all the letters on a count of three, read them and go 'It's that person we want - ring them NOW!'. I know from watching my husband trawl through job applications that it is quite a drawn-out process. Different offices will have different procedures - are you aware of theirs?
I applied for a job I had been doing for six months, an experimental post that became a permanent one. They advertised, they had to by law, and after three weeks I was summoned for an interview. Try not to be so impatient, or pessimistic. You are not in any position to judge what they are, or are not doing. You took the most important step by applying in the first place - and I expect you are not the only applicant. Give them time. I wish you well. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
Box where you state if you have physical/other impairments and tell them what it is...0

Well yes i know that for every job there are hundreds of people that maybe apply for them....
I have been in the position you have of having to apply for a job i was already doing, had been told i was doing a very good job then afterwards got told they only interviewed me out of courtesy.....That is the reason for my apprehension and until someone has had something like that happen to them they will understand why apprehension creeps in when put in that scenario again...
Neither am i judging them i just know that by this time last year they had already started the process and as I said i am in unknown territory here as i havent been in this position before when applying for any job...

Hi Elaine not sure what box you ticked regarding getting an interview...What was its heading?
References need to be in place before a formal offer of a post is confirmed and accepted officially.
Try not to panic there is still time!! Some companies turn things around quickly....others? well>>>>>>>>>>>> ! Dont think they understand what they are putting the applicants through!

Hi,
As the others have said, give it a bit longer. Some places take a while to reply, as they don't look at the applicaions until the closing date and offering interviews does take some sorting out, I know I used to do it when I worked in Oxford. Although you sent your application in early, they have tow wait to the last day before choosing as the last people may be the people they want. Also arranging staff to be present to interview can be a pain, everyone's free on different days!
You are right though. If you are qualified to do the job, you should be offered an interview. Good luck, I hope you soon hear. Love Sue0 -
Hi Toni
Now have mental picture in head of you n Sol with boxing gloves on!!!! Made me laugh anyway.....

Hi Cebeem
Not sure its exact title but one at bottom of app forms where you declare a disability.....
Well most places I have worked they dont get references till you are employed.....
I just worry if after 14 days which is what they say if you havent heard from them youve failed that i wont have heard and I was encouraged to apply....
Elainex0 -
Hi Sue
Well I know that but by this time last year had heard im sure so i really wonder if the disability is an obstacle as i feared it may be entering the jobs market....
I sure as heck must have been qualified as did job great last year apparently....Would love to ring up pretend im a potential employer and request a reference to see what they say....Worries me.....
Elainex0 -
Hi, A disability should'nt be an obsticle, but, like a lot of things in life, it can be. Just as being a young woman of childbearing age can put of some companies, although much less so now than a decade or so ago.
On the other hand, some places will have a much more positive outlook and as long as you can do the job, disregard any disability or see it as positive, ie if you can overcome the disability you can do anything and it proves how adaptable you are! So its swings and roundabouts.
These days the employer is likely to have a lot of applications, and so it may be a while to decide who to interview but, its early days, often places will tell you it will be two to three weeks before you hear, so its still early days! I hate waiting too though, and understand your impatience!!! Good luck, love Sue0 -
Hi Sue
Well thats why i hid my walking stick last year and when i got interviewed wore boots but was in agony for a weeks afterwards....Only took my stick to work when finally admitted could not use the stairs like the others could....
Im hoping they can see even with my disability that i have lots to offer and they know me too, now im wondering if thats a good or bad thing...I know one bloke who had worked there two years ago joined our data entry team and they were quite horrid to him, he also applied for a fulltime job in january (well 2 actually) and got refused for both of them....Made me wonder at the time, even moreso now...
Thats why the government come up with good ideas, helping people back into work but come on any jobcentre i have been to have been pretty lax and not helpful - any job i have got in the past ive done all the work myself....So it looks good on theory all these new incentives but in practical maybe not so smooth sailing...
