As a Newbie to this OA, I was prescribed Movicol, along with my OA Medication, to help me go to the Loo. Yes I have probs when the pain is bad in the Spine.

Is this a normal thing forgot to ask the DR when with her yesterday.

Regards
MM

    Hi maggiemay :D

    welcome to the forum.

The only time I needed some help with 'going' was when I've been on Morphine. then it's a nightmare  and I have to be prescribed something by the doc. :?

otherwise the meds don't cause me a problem.... but I suppose it depends on what you're prescribed and your own metabolism. I eat plenty fruit and high fibre foods...

nice to meet you... and hope to see you posting around the forums!

hi maggiemay, welcome to the forum :D

i have OA also, and yep I do suffer a bit myself. ive been taking cod liver oil, seems to be working.

i know all about movicol. my son has been on it since he was 3 as he has a bowel problem and its fantastic stuff. unfortunately my boys is pretty permanent but if he ever misses taking a sachet, boy does he know it. its fantastic stuff. he has his mixed in his teatime drink, didn't like it at first but he makes it himself now.

hope it makes things a little more comfortable for you x

My mum swears by it. I take something else to assist when required. DD

I used to do home care as my career and a lot of my clients used it, they used to swear by it, give it a go, if it works for you then great.

    Hi Maggie May,

A welcome from me as well.

I also got chronic oa in my spine but I am lucky I have crohn's so the rest would be TMI

I think it is normal as when I had my back really bad before they operated I did have to take a drug similar. I get retention from the back and vomiting as well (though the crohn's might be the course of both) It seems to also depend n which nerve is being irritated.... That what they told me back then but it was over 20 years ago now.

I hope you find it helps and nice to meet you. Cris x

I have to take Movical too because of the painkillers i take for PA and OA.
I mix the Movical into my orange juice and then it doesn`t taste like wall papering paste. Lol

    Hi Maggiemay and welcome,

on lower doses of solpadol (paracetomol and codeine) my usual diet of lots of fruit, veg, wholemeal bread and prunes was enough. On higher doses I found movicol helped. After my op (when nothing was moving) I used a combination of movicol and senna.

    Speedy

NB movicol comes in different flavours including chocolate and also supposedly tasteless.
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi MM

Welcome to the forum :D I would not say it is normal to be prescribed Movicol or similar along with OA meds but I presume your gp is aware of your "problem" so it was a good idea of his/hers to "kill two birds with one stone" so to speak, as some of the OA meds can cause constipation.

Thanks for all the replies folks, Dr well aware of probs with loo. And as one of you said it does taste like wallpaper paste, with a touch of lemon in it.

I love my fruit and veg, instead of eating a big dinner I would maybe sit down to 5 different vegs on my plate, then eat some fruit.

Dr is still deciding what medication to give, was on a painkiller but it was to harsh for me, then she put me on Diclofenic with co-codamol, not to bad but to go again in a week to see how its doing.
She is also deciding if I need another tablet for the OA.

As many of you know if you danced you will be shake RATTLING and rolling.
Im not in the full stages of OA but at least Dr is doing her bit to control what pain there is at min, in the spine and shoulders

My mum mixes hers with lemonade - that way it is palatable, apparently. I don't know if that's a good idea or not but it seems to work for ma. I take docusate capsules - the doc says four per day but I find two OK, one in the morning, one at night. DD

agree with you there DD, my son is only 9 and he's been on it sinced he was 3 but trying to get a small child to drink it was hard so I snuck it in his pop, lemonade, cola or the like... he's used to it now but it can be put in something to make it more palatable. it works for him x
