Has anyone experimented with dairy foods ? I find if I cut out dairy totally that pain and stiffness are decreased , is this just me or have others found this too ?

Welcome to the forums - I hope you will find us a useful resource! Various things react with me. I am dairy-intolerant so I don't eat much in the way of those foodstuffs, I find that pickles and chutneys really set my joints zinging as do tomatoes. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi jilly and welcome to the forum
I haven't found dairy products or any other obvious dietary links between arther flares and foodstuffs. :?
though..... if it helps you then that's really good!
it will be interesting to read if others have found that changing diet or avoiding certain foods has helped.

Hi Jilly,
Welcome from me as well, this is a good place and they are a nice lot.
I have crohn's so have tried cutting out most food stuff on a router to see which upsets it and in my case nothing I cut out helped the bones. I know some people do find diet helps them but sadly for the bones and me its makes no odds.
If its helping you that's good and it just goes to show we are all different eh? Nice to meet yo and I hope you continue to feel better. Cris x0 -
Hi I have a friend that has RA, he cut out dairy around 2 years ago now.
It took at least 6 months before he noticed a slight difference, after 18 months he feels a lot less stiff and doesn't have has much pain, he still needs his meds but not has many.

I think I'm right in saying that arthritis is rare in Japan as they do not eat a lot of dairy produce. I'm sure I read that somewhere - along similar lines menopausal problems are rare too. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi Jillyb
Yes, I'm a firm believer that what I eat affects my joints ... I'm not saying that it is the 'cure all' but I do find it I cut down on dairy and processed foods (including cakes, chocolate) my joints are a bit better..
I never eat red meat or tomatoes or oranges now as I found that within 12 hours of having them my joints deteriorated..
I wish there was more evidence/information about the effect of certain foods..
I know it is not the same for everyone with inflammatory arthritis, but certainly for me, personally, diet does influence things..

Hi Jilly,
This is really interesting..... I am a veggie but not a strict one or a vegan. I really hate soya milk..... I would ok with the spreads I think but the milk I just can't get on with...... Even though I have huge issues with the dairy herd side of things.... I still have milk in my tea....
Keep us posted could you please? Its really is interesting. Cris x0 -
I don't like dairy but have been forcing a yoghurt a day down my neck to try and protect myself against osteoporosis. Have had RA since I was 7 and have never been keen on dairy.
I may be an exception to the rule, but be careful about cutting out all dairy as RAers are more prone to osteoporosis.

Hi Jillyb,
that is interesting - if it works for you - wow.
Maybe arthritis care would know of any studies/research into this.
Make sure you take food suppliments though if you are excluding all dairy.
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Hi Jillyb
there is a bit of information on the Arthritis Research Uk website under the heading 'diet, nutrition and arthritis.' if you Google it you shoudl find it.. It's not brilliant information and, as I say, I wish there was more research done on this topic.

I do not eat wheat so to cut out dairy as well would be really pants. I must admit this dairy issue is a big question for people with breast cancer but again no real research has been done. I must admit for me dairy upsets my stomach so i really shouldn't eat it but i love cheese.0

Hi,
I dont find it makes any difference to me but if it does to you great.
Chris I'm a veggie as well..[NOT VEGAN LOL} I couldnt stomach soya milk so its skimmed milk for me.
Hileena0 -
hi and welcome I'm a vegatarian so get my protein from eggs etc I hate soya milk as well so drink semi skimmed its supposed to be better with more calcium then skimmed, full milk makes me gag yes really although I love butter but it has to be Anchour, yoghurts are fine but prefer fat free or very low, I suffer with IBS so take a probiotic tablet every day which helps with stomach problems, I had just tried to stop eating chocolate as i was eating too much but my diabetes was too high so for numerous reasons the chocs got to go
I've just had a season of fresh tomatoes in my greenhouse but I did not notice any change I do however find fresh orange juice or J20 does make me feel rough and aggravates my stomach and mouth ulcers, so I'm giving up chocolate I bake most of my cakes and dont eat biscuits I will however start being more watchful of my diet changes0 -
Hi everyone , thanks for all your kind and interesting replies , I'm sure that different foods affect each of us in a different way , it would be good to know if there is any real scientific research being done on this subject . Thanks again for the welcome - Jilly .0

I read that most of the Dairy products have an effect on your aches and pains, if i have read the posts right.
My indulgance is Goats Milk Ice Cream, Goats Cheese and Goats Milk.
I have not as yet noticed any probs with these Dairy products. I used to breed and keep pedigree goats, and have always used their milk for something, even Goats meat, wont go into the aspects of that side of keeping goats.
My main reason for this post is that Goats Milk does not have the fat or lumpy Globs, cows milk has, and it could may well help with the pains, I havnt had goats meat for a little while as we cant get it at the minute, but when i took some beef steak, i certainly noticed a diff in pains, they were slightly more pronounced.
What do other people think of the Goats Produce idea? or is it just me being funny meat wise.

We have a farmers market and we can get bufflow cheese and meat....i might just go down that path again and give it a go. The goats meat..well yum yum we buy a goat when we get it and have it jointed like a lamb. Have not done it for a few years but it maybe a good idea. Goat is lower in fat than chicken and a really lovely meat. It is hard to get hold of and i am sure you would probably have to have the whole goat...you could share it with someone.
Not sure about getting hold of goats cheese will have to look but it is the cost as well. They string you for anything that is not mass produced or eaten for heath reasons.0 -
Hi jillyb1
There is a lot of research into food and RA.
If you go to http://paleodiet.com/ra/#res you will find a list of some of the research going on today, a lot of it is very interesting and some of it just seems a little wacky but if something good comes out of it, i'm sure we arthritics will appreciate it
best wishes

You are on the money there, maggiemay. (Well, you led me away from home, just to save you from being alone ....) Cows milk is lactose-rich, I think that's the right term. The human gut is not designed to process lactose efficiently, unlike a calf's gut. Sheep and goat's milk is either low in lactose, or free of it. My mother keeps telling me to drink full-fat cow's milk - 'It's a food' she says. Yes, it is, a food for baby cows. I had a dairy-free existence as a child, thanks to raging ezcema, and we were told to use sheep or goat's milk, but this was back in the early 60s and no-one sold it then, or at least not where we lived. I have to have skimmed milk in my tea, and I use good ol' cow's for that. That is the only time I have milk. I eat my cereals dry. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. I have fruit juice on my cereal yum yum, cold orange juice on cornflakes done that for years. I went the soya root for a while...God that milk is awful even tried rice milk not great in anything. I am going to look around for goats produce to see what price it is. I am sure you are right about the latose. They do say that wheat and milk allergies can go together maybe it is going to be the same for me. Makes me laugh really my dad was a milkman and i use to drink single cream as a kid...and Blue top milk which was really creamy milk. Ah those were the days.0
