Broken Toe

Morning all,

I came back from work Monday evening, and piled my bags into the house and took off my sandals. The top of my foot was itching and you know how you sometimes rub your foot along the floor on the carpet to help scratch it? (or maybe that's just a mad thing I'd do!).

I was doing that with my toes bent under my foot to scratch, and my bad (or worst of the two) knee buckled for a second and I heard this 'crack'. I didn't think too much of it to start with other than 'that hurts' and thinking I'd got a burn or something off the carpet.

I went outside to say hi to the kids and hubby who was trying to fix the mower and thought 'you know, that really does hurt' and when I went back inside having realised it was hurting to walk the toe next to my big toe was completely purple!

I thought, oh darn it, I've broken it! It wasn't too bad yesterday, I buddy wrapped it to my big toe, but last night I just couldn't sleep for the pain, it was horrible! I felt sick with, way worse than yesterday, so not impressed at all, as it's a broken toe on my good leg with a bad knee on the other leg!

Any suggestions for helping it other than icing and buddy wrapping? I haven't used my stick so far but wondering if I should to help spread the load since it's so sore? What do you think?

Sorry to waffle!

    Hi Angie

Have you been to the hospital? I'm not sure what they can do but you should really have it looked at.

I think you're doing the right thing by icing it. Make you you raise you leg too. My mum broke her toe by dropping her suitcase on it.

    I hope the pain eases.

I don't think much can be done as such for a broken toe, but it might be wise to contact your GP for advice or even go to A&E and have it Xrayed. I hope it feels better soon - my neighbour used to break her toes regularly (how I have no idea) and she would just wait for them to heal, but I would get it checked out. Poor you. DD

    OUCH!!!!

I once put me finger in the vacuum cleaner at the bottom where it rolls round and one of my fingers rooled round and did something similar

It looked like a dead persons finger :( Does you toe? That's what I picture.

I didnt go to A&E either and did the same as you with bandage. I think I might do now incase of any complications due to arthur.

I would definitely use the stick and stay off it as much as poss

Hope it gets better very soon.

    Love

Thanks all. It is very sore it has to be said, taking ages to walk around the office etc. I will bring my stick in tomorrow.

I have taken a some co-codemol which has eased it. I agree about the arthur. My one toe (the same one on the other foot) makes clicking noises as you bend it, like the joints do of a barbie doll, and gets sore, so I reckon it's in that toe anyway, but nothing in the others yet, so I should be careful.

Just the thought of sitting in A&E for hours to be told it's broken puts me off, those places are so depressing!

If it feels worse though, I will go to the GP at least. It's really purple at the moment, and a bit swollen, and mega tender to touch, so I wouldn't want anyone touching it - I'm such a wimp!! :D

Hi Angie, I think you should get it x rayed to make sure it sets and repairs ok. Using the stick is a good idea, as is the ice and bandaging it to the other toe. Elevate it whenever you can.

    ooh ouch!

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

Thank you, what a lovely lot you are. It's throbbing now but the pain killers are wearing off. I've sat in a meeting for the last 2 hours with it on a chair, so i'm hoping that will have helped.

Thanks for the advice, I will be a good girl and get it seen to if I think it needs it, I promise.

Thank you lovely people! I rested it well last night and it was quite comfortable in bed. I had some painkillers a bit before I went to sleep and they helped. I didn't sleep wonderfully well, but that's normal for me, but the pain was less.

Resting works well! It wasn't hurting till I got up, but I've got my stick so at least I am taking the strain off it. Feels really warm compared to the rest of my body, but the buddy strapping is helping loads giving it support. I'm wearing my sandals with a rigid sole to help as I can't get my normal shoe on as it hurts my toe!

I broke my big toe once before like you Joan. Really horrible isn't it! I was on a wave machine at a big swimming place and hadn't realised I'd reached the shallow end put my foot down and cracked it. They didn't plaster it strangely, but just strapped it my now other broken toe. I think they will be sympathising with each other right now - :D

I'm OK DD thank you for asking dear. I'm a bit tired, but that's because I didn't go to bed until late, and then we were woke up in the early hours thinking the house was being burgled when it was just my daughter sorting out her nose bleed! She gets them once in a while, but she's not the quietest of people in the night!

That was about 4am and I just dozed after that.

Toe is starting to heal. The bruising is going down now and it's a bit easier to walk on, so that is good at least. I re-strapped it last night with hubby's help and it feels OK. Tender still, but OK.

Thank you for caring. I hope you are well today hun?

Thank you for asking - I'm sorry you had a disturbed night, join the club! I think today might be shaping up to be one of the worst of my life to date: I'll know one way or the other by 10pm tonight! You take care and rest that foor. DD

    Hi Angie,

Sorry you had a bad night. I kinda think if it is no better it should be looked at as it might be something other than a break. What they did with one of mine was tape it to the toe next to it and that acted as a support for it. I don't know if that would help? Still think you might be better at least taking it to your gp just to check.

Hope it soon all settles down. Cris x

Morning Angie, Glad to hear you toe is ever so slightly better. I have no advise on broken toes but do know I paid the price for not going to A&E and getting crutches when I sprained my ankle. I though ah, its only a sprain, not sitting in A&E for that! 2 months later I went back to my GP as it was still causing me grief and he said I was my own worse enemy, if i had been on crutches taking the weight off it I would be back on my feet fine! So use that stick and get it checked, you might just have dislocated and then relocated it.

As for scratching your foot on the carpet, I couldn't agree with you more, its great stuff :-)

    Thanks all!

I have buddy strapped it Chris, so it's giving it a bit of support, which is much more comfortable than leaving it loose. Feels all vulnerable and weird, and the kids keep getting close to knocking it all the time.

I also had a bad accident with my ankle and knee when younger. It was after a night out with my friend (we were tipsy for sure), and decided to get a kebab, and I took a fall down the steps coming out.

My ankle was so swollen I couldn't get my boot on the next morning and it was black. I hadn't broken it (I don't think), and had also badly twisted my knee (hence why it's so bad now with OA I guess), but never had it looked it and it's never been right since.

You live and learn eh! I shall keep an eye on it though, and will definitely get it checked if it seems even slightly iffy.

You're a lovely bunch - do you know that?

DD - hope you are OK hun, don't suffer in silence will you.... hugs.

    Hi Angie,

Well I hope you will be able to rest it a bit more now that is the weekend.

Bad enough when you stump a toe

Can you put a pillow near your foot at night to keep the pressure of the covers away from your toe?

Thanks angie - I'm just at the thin end of the humira wedge - even after 14 months on the stuff it still takes me by surprise somehow. I'm walking on razor blades again - many of them - my knees are like balloons, my ankles like marrows and my toes like sausages, but my inflammatory markers remain at 1 and 5. That pleases the docs, anyway. The pain is astonishing and I just can't hack it at the mo. Then there's the pred sweats, the round-the-clock nausea from my new BP med and two whacks of horribly bad news. Never mind eh? Just another 72 hours then another belt of humira - that will sort one thing out, for a while anyway! I think I can declare this the second worst day - but it's a close-run thing. And strictly speaking there are still 7 hours of this infernal day to go so it could still win! DD
