i had my hip resurfaced about 6 years ago and it has been mostly fine but in the last few days something horrible is happening!
it seems to be dislocating. i move it and i feel a big clunk and the pain is unbearable. i have to try to manipulate it then evenually theres another clunk and it feels better.
i'm waiting to see if i can get an appointment with the surgeon but he's at guys hospital which is a long way away from me, but it's no good going to our local hospital as they have no idea about hip resurfacing!
just wandered if anyone has been through this as i don't know anyone who has had the op so no one else to ask!!
ouch! from sue

    Hi Suzter
I haven`t had a resurface, but my THR did dislocate 2 weeks ago, and it is very painful. if you are struggling to get an appointment , I would go to A & E (I had no choice as had 2 ambulance crews). At least they can do X rays and see if something is wearing out and causing the movement.
have you spoken to the secretary about your concerns?
    Hope you get sorted soon.

    Hi Sue,

I had a resurface-replacement on my right hip in May.

That doesn't sound at all right and very painful and scary.

I would definitely go to A&E or for an x-ray as they will be able to tell you what is happening. If it is dislocating they may be able to splint/brace it or whatever and contact your consultant at Guys on your behalf. I would really pester for the appointment at Guys - would your GP help? Have you got your crutches still? If so are you using them? I would follow hip restrictions too if you can.

Please keep us updated, take care,

    SPeedy
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

Sue, you have been having a rough time lately, but please don`t leave this any longer. By acting now, you may be able to prevent whatever is going on. On the other hand, you could find that it`s nothing too serious, and, therefore, have your mind put at rest.

Let us know how you get on. Love to Ellie and Sarah..........Ange.x.

    Hi Suzster

That sounds worrying, not to say very painful! I agree, I think you need to be seen soon. Is there a local A & E where you could go? At least there you could have some x-rays done so you know what's happening.. (you could ask to take the x-rays with you for when you see the Orthopaed Surgoen).

    Take care

spoke to guys who are trying very hard to get me seen at the next clinic, they hope next thursday, they told me to go to my local a ande to get it x rayed straight away just to check it's still ok and in the right place ect as if it isn't i need to go to guys straight away.
my local a and e were not much help. they won't do an x ray unless i go in when it is actually dislocated, they said i'd have to see my gp and get them to refer me to x ray, which would take weeks at least, not good. so i'm going to call guys gain this morning and see if they can contact x ray in my local hospital and explain the situation, maybe that will work?
thanks for all the advice and support, as always you lot are great!! even though i haven't been around as much.
heres to everything feeling better soon.

Hi Sue, sounds a good plan - Guys or a GP should be able to ring x ray and arrange an immediate x ray if that is felt necessary - my GP has done this before for me when my hip was playing up - to check nothing sinister was going on.

    Why is life so complicated?

had an x ray done yesterday at my local hospital, they knew nothing about hip resurfacing but said it looked ok. i have a bit of bone 'floating' around by my hip but she didn't know if it was old or new!
hopefully seeing my pecialist at guys next thursday so i should know a bit more then.
i read on my hospital notes that the hip bone is thinning a bit so i guess thats why they are concerned that it may fracture, they didn't tell me that, they told me to be aware it could fracture but nothing about the bone situation, which annoyed me!
but now i just have to wait until next week, they gave me a disc with the x rays on so i can take it to guys with me, so i had a sneaky look, it always amazes me looking at my metal hip!
i was surprised i could look at it though as i thought the disc would be more secure, but hey!!
