when i went for my appointment with the rheummy yesterday he gave me a few blood tests, the CRP and ESR to test for inflammation and a TPO test in relation to my thyroid.
ive suffered from hypothyroidism since i was 16. when i turned 29, it disappeared :? and all blood test results came back normal and it stayed that way for a few years which confused me but i was happy it was sorted. last year, it started again, my thyroid level was low and i was put back on levothyroxine and the dose is steadily being increased as it gets worse...
having just looked up what TPO blood test is for, its to find the cause of the thyroid disfunction and presence of thyroid peroxidase antibodies in the blood could mean its hashimoto's disease. symptoms of this are underactive thyroid, difficulty swallowing and a yoyo effect on the gland which can 'sometimes splutter its way back into working'.
if this is the case it would explain a lot!
if these tests come back positive, id finally get some answers to alot of what is wrong with me over the years... if not, im still a mystery
sorry for the little ramble ive just had, its all getting so confusing ~ last year i was perfectly healthy! LOL

Wow Dippy!!
that is really interseting - Ive never heard of this before :?
It's not serious is it? Does it explain other things too?
Love

It would be good to have answers wouldn't it Dippydoodah?
Does this mean your thyroid could start working again at a later date?
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
hi toni and speedy
i dont think its too serious. i remember my gp telling me years ago, if i didnt control it it may lead to heart disease later in life but it was so long ago when i was told, i dont know if ive remembered it right? i'll have to do a bit of research... :?
it would certainly explain a few things. ive been complaining for a long time that my throat is sore and the last few weeks ive struggled to swallow, even when im not eating or drinking. it would explain why i suddenly got 'better' for a few years. im presuming then if this was the case and it is hashimoto disease theres a chance it could correct itself again one day? im going to have to look into all this.
i didnt even know about all this until my rheummy pointed it all out. he really is a great doctor. i always think his appointments are short but when i realise how much he puts into that one appointment, he really gets things done which is all that matters really.
im going to wait for the result (im kinda hoping it is this so i can put a name to something else)
you learn something new everyday0 -
Hi Dippy,
Doesnt it make such a difference when you can put a name to a thing or get a def. diagnosis......it doesnt take the pain away but it makes me feel much better.....then can cope with it better....I think a lot of people feel like this

Hi Dippy
Isn't it strange what we can be walking about with and not know, I am so glad the picture is becoming clearer for you.
You must feel better now you know what you are up against.
Good Luck with everything

thank you
it really does make a difference to know whats happening. i feel ready to fight it suddenly with a new optimism. don't get me wrong, im sure i'll still have those bad days where i feel ive been thrown into a blender and put back together and not even a dog doin' a tap dance will be able to put a smile on my face, just hopefully i will be able to handle it better.
ive suffered from the muscle pains and fatigue for several months so to know i have been actually diagnosed with fibromyalgia funnily makes me ready to tackle it... strange
im ready to kick some pain butt(for now anyway lol) x
