OH Stu has osteoporosis and OA and I've got osteoporosis RA & OA. Without going into a long diatribe we have recently been awarded a grant of £1,000, plus a County grant of £200 to be spent on double handrails down our front 5 steep steps and the same from the back door to the dustbin area. We have also had the dangerous glazed tiles on the front path and steep step to the pavement removed and a gentle slope put in.

The work is now finished and is already making a tremendous difference to our lives. The cost to us has been £153. to top up the two grants totalling £1,200.

We live in Eastbourne, East Sussex and I do not know whether such wonderful help is available in other counties.

I'm very happy to pass on any info I have to help others.

Hi Cherrybim, the adaptions sound great and should really make a difference to ease of doing things. Enjoy.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    That's really useful information cherrybim!

I don't know if those types of grants are available here in Central Scotland.... maybe for privately owned?, but I'm not sure.

I was assessed by OT and handrails added to both sets of outside steps and a 'keyless entry' door fitted at the front as I couldn't lock or unlock the door. I think the funding came from the Housing Association or a combination of HA and Community Care (social services).
It was suggested to me by the HA that I pay for the new door..... but I reminded them that they had an obligation towards me as a registered disabled tenant... they never did send me a bill!

Adaptations do make such a difference don't they. :D enjoy using yours!

ps... forgot to say I'm under 65, so maybe what's available is dependant on age?... I don't know.
