I was on methotrexate 20mg tablets for 12 weeks and i was feeling really sick and quite poorly on them, so my rhuemy nurse changed me over to injections. I have been on these for 5 weeks now but these are still making my feel really sick, to the point where for two days it is really hard to cope with looking after my 3 boys.
I have told my nurse every week that the sick feeling and even been sick is still there. All I get told is that the injection shouldn't do this as it does not pass the stomach but, for me it does.
Has any one else had this on the methotrxate injections.

    Hi mightymam,

I changed over to Mtx injections because of the side effects when on mtx tabs.

I did still get some nausea for several weeks before it settled down... although I do get a reminder every now and again!.
Did they reduce the amount of Mtx? that for me was one of the benefits... they reduced me to 15mgs as the Mtx is easier absorbed by injection so you don't need as much to gain the same effect.

I don't like to contradict your nurse... but it's not the stomach that objects to Mtx but the liver ... hence the squeamishness hours/ day after you take it. that's what I was told by my rheummy.

hope it settles for you too,

I was switched to injections for the same reasons you were. As I got to the higher doses they still made me feel sick so my RD prescribed an anti-sicknesss tablet to take with my MTX. It seems to haave done the trick. Ask if you can have an anti-emetic prescribed, or ask your GP about it.

Hi mightymam - you are not the only one! I think, if anything, I felt sicker on the injected meth than on the tabs and I too was told it was not possible. I don't know what the answer is but thought Iris's point about a lower injected dose was an interesting one. My dose wasn't lowered when I went over to injections but it does make sense. Perhaps you could just ask to try a lower dose for a bit to see if it makes any difference for you. Nothing to lose cos you could always go back up again if need be.

Good luck mightymam. Thinking of you.

Mightyman I'm really surprised your nurse or Dr. have'nt advised you to get some anti sickness tablets. I take them for a day before my injection and a couple of days afterwards. They really do help lessen the effects of the sickness. It would be worth trying some to see how you get on. Good luck.

    Hi marion.

I'm on 10mg metoclopromide as needed. It seems to have done the trick. I have also been on cyclizine, when I tried tablets for ther second time.

    Hi

I have only just found out that you can have it by injection. I have suffered with mouth ulcers and blood blisters in my mouth for years now. Why do some people miss out on vital information?
I have had my Methotrixate increased to 24 mgs over the last 2 weeks and have felt a little sick, but nothing major. I think I must have an iron stomach! I have 100 mgs of diclofenic and 4 sulfursalazine a day as well.

I might ask to change over if the ulcers get worse.

    Thankyou to all that replied.
My nurse decided this week to take me off Methotrxate altogether because of the sickness and mouth ulcers as I am finding it to much when trying to look after my three boys. Now waiting for appointment for next week to see the doctor who will then decide whether to lower the dose and something with it or put me on something new altogether.
I will also mention the anti-sickness tablets aswell.
