Fluctuations in weight

Hello everyone

I am new to the condition and new to the Forum. I wondered if anyone can help me with this query. Since having a flare-up 3 weeks ago I have lost 12lbs in weight - this without doing anything other than being sensible about what I eat. Over this weekend I have started becoming stiff and sore and I have gained 5 lbs in weight since Friday morning - again without doing anything spectacularly different in terms of eating and drinking. Is weight gain a symptom of Psoriatic Arthritis - when my hands and feet swell, am I retaining fluid?

Hi, my weight used to fluctuate too, now it it is steady - steadily going up thanks to oral steroids! I too have PA which mainly affects my sacro-iliac joints, knees and ankles. I over=produce synovial fluid which leads to swelling in my knees, ankles and toes. The rest of me is just flobby thanks to lack of exercise. I lose weight when I really flare: I lose my appetite and only want full-fat Coke and Hula Hoops and it falls off me. 3.5 stone is my best record to date on that diet! What meds are you currently on? Weight gain is a possible side effect of many, I think (probably wrongly!) Sorry: I forgot to say nice to meet you! DD
Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben

Hello Elaine and welcome to the forum :D

I've had PA for 15 yrs affecting hands as well as other joints but not had the sudden weight loss or weight gain that you've experienced. :|

Flare ups do cause swelling of the joints and 'sausage digits' on hands and feet are a symptom peculiar to PA it has to be said.

I've posted you a link to the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Alliance that I've found really helpful over the years and which I hope you will find helps you understand more about this condition.

I'm sure there will be others around soon who might have experienced the same symptoms as you and can help you with your query.

If in doubt or concerned about it maybe it would be wise to see your doc? or better still the rheummy...

hope to see you posting around the forum.

Thanks dreamdaisy (lovely name by the way). I am not on any meds for PsA yet - had cortisone injections into my hands and feet when I saw the rheumatologist. I take meds for an under-active thyroid and high blood pressure plus Fluoextine because my marriage broke up a couple of weeks before I was diagnosed with PsA and I was "clinically depressed". I guess they are waiting to see how I get on before they add anything else into the mix! Seeing Rheumatologist again in November - this is all new to me at present.
