A magical mystery tour

Hi
I've just spent a couple of days on a magical mystery tour of Liverpool. What a fabulous city it is :!: There is so much to see and do.
I went on the Beatles trail, visiting all the locations associated with them, and did the full tourist thing by having my photo taken at the gates of Strawberry Field, walking along Penny Lane, and having a drink in the Cavern Club on Matthew Street. I also saw the houses where the Beatles grew up, and went round the excellent Beatles Story museum in Albert Dock. To complete my trip, I went on a ferry across the Mersey, which was lovely in bright sunshine. It was a real trip down memory lane, and brought back memories of that era. Fantastic :!:
As well as the Beatles attractions, Liverpool is a wonderful place to visit. There are two amazing cathedrals, a huge shopping centre, and the Liverpool Tate art gallery, where I spent several hours too. It is a vibrant city, and the Liverpudlians, with their famous wit and humour, make it a great place to spend some time.

Glad that you enjoyed it Joan
The Anglican Cathedral is the largest one in Europe, I believe. I didn't have time to go inside either of the cathedrals, but would like to go back again to visit both of them.
I did enjoy the trip, and I was amazed at the very interesting architecture, including the famous Liver building. There are lots of very modern buildings around the docks too. Well worth a visit.0 -

Hi Julie
There is a wonderful exhibition on at the Tate at the moment, the Liverpool Biennial ( Touched ) It runs until 28th November, and I would recommend anyone interested in art to go to see it. There are works by many famous artists, and it is a free exhibition. I want to go back before it closes as there is so much to take in at once.0 -
Joan, so glad you loved our fab city. Everyone is very proud of the "new" Liverpool., and it is wonderful. However, I miss the Liverpool I grew up in, in the sixties. We still had all the fabulous architecture, great theatres, shops etc., but there was a more "villagey" atmosphere, long gone now. Yes, it`s buzzing now, and the tourists are very welcome, but it will never again have quite the same vibrancy as we saw in those Merseybeat days. Oh, I`m getting quite tearful now!
I love both the cathedrals, they are so very different. Obviously the Anglican Cathedral has been there for many years. I remember, however, as a little girl at school, collecting for what seemed a lifetime, for the new Cathedral of Christ the King to be built. I was married with children of my own, before this finally happened. It was quite quickly named "Paddy`s Wigwam" by all scousers.
We also have the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and I sang there in 1958, and my younger son was first violinist in the Youth Orchestra in 1976.
Oh, and don`t forget our two footie teams.......I`ve had many happy times with my boys - all three of em! - watching the Reds and Blues, bringing trophies back to the city.
I could go on and on with "All our yesterdays", but I won`t bore you. Thanks for taking me on a trip down memory lane Joan......Ange.x.0 -

Hi Ange
You must have some marvellous memories of the Merseybeat days. As you say, the atmosphere could never be quite the same as in the sixties, but I was very impressed by the city all the same. I had never been before, and didn't appreciate how much there is to see and do.
Our guide on the tour was a true scouser, and very quick with his wit. That made it even more enjoyable.0 -

[/b]Hi Joan so glad you enjoyed your time at Liverpool,
My dad was from there, we haven't been there for a few years but have lovely memories, my mom was a Yorkshire lass, her family moved over to Shropshire when she was young, she went to work in the sugar beet factory
then met my Dad they fell in love, but her family did not like him, So one night they eloped & went to Liverpool then got married,
My Dad was also in the royal marines so when he passed away all our family
Plus the marines took a trip a cross the Mersey to scatter his ashes
It was very emotional but a beautiful day

Joan it is good to hear you had a good time...Liverpool often gets bad press from people who have never visited the city.
If you ever go back the cathedrals are magnificent both in their own ways. Paddys wig wam has a crypt underneath with an amazing story which supports Angels story about how long it took to plan and build and all the changes that were made.
I am proud to say my son has just moved into one of those lovely apartments overlooking the river ..its beautiful...I'm sure he would put you up if you go back (breakfast may not be included though).

Hi Joan
I am so glad you enjoyed it, we used to go regular when we where young, hoping to see the Beatles, we never did.
It really is a beautiful city, my friend has just been on the Mersey trip, it was around 4 hours long, then you come back by bus...she loved it.
