Hi, I've been to the OT today for the hand clinic. they've given me a new splint to support the wrist and thumb more and its made of nicer stuff. I told them that the first splints made my arms and hands itch and uncomfortable, so I've got some new ones to try out. Next week is a wax bath, which I know is nice! Then if this splint is ok they are going to make me one to wear most of the time on my left hand and then maybe injections or a visit to orthopeadics. She is worried that my thumb and the raised bit at the bottom of it are a dark blue colour (not as dramatic as it sounds)! and the joint quite painful.

I'm also referred to physio for my neck, which I didn't know about! They have a waiting list, so won't worry about that! Seems all appointments! Keeps me busy. Love Sue

    Hi Sue

Glad you now have a better splint to try out. Hope it is more comfortable for you than the other were (mine are kinda scratchy too so I know what you mean). The wax bath sounds nice though - never had one of those but I know that lots of people find them helpful. Sorry about your dramatic blue thumb joint :(

Good that you have a physio referral for your neck - even if it was a surprise to you!

And as you say, with all these appts you are kept busy and out of mischief!

    Good luck with the splint.

    Love Tilly xx

Hi Sue, new splint and actual appointment sounds promising. Hope splint really helps.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi Sue,

Nice to see you about again :D Its about time on the appointment side isn't it? You have had a fairly long wait there and hopefully that and a new splint will help you so much. Hos the kitten? Luv and a ((( ))) cris xx

Hi Sue, good to hear you are getting a bit of help and support. I've got the bog standard splints and they are very uncomfortable. The last ones I had started to smell of mould - they didn't look dirty but I washed them anyway! Hope they help.

Morning woodbon, well things are moving and sounding promising. I hope the new splints work better for you and are more comfortable - oh, and the blue thumb thing? Stop doodling on yourself with a biro! DD

    Hi Sue,
How have you found the new splints? Big improvement I hope. It looks like you have a busy time with all the appointments. It’s great that things are finally moving for you. Let us know how you get on at the OT one. I found the injection in my wrist made a wonderful difference so with luck things will improve for you too.

Hello Thank you for replies. Yes the new splint is much better its softer and doesn't irritate like the other one. It also has the metal bar up the side of the thumb so that it supports and protects that. She said if this works she will make a stroger one that will support more and be a better fit 'made to measure', very posh! It seems to stop the thumb from going into the palm of the hand, if you see what I mean. Also I can bend the rest of my fingers properly, which is useful.

The only thing is that my other hand seems to be complaining a bit as it hasn't got a nice new splint! But she only did one as its an experiment! My cats came and sniffed it and looked at me a bit strangely quite funny last night as I have to be careful I don't bang them on the head when I stroke them. They don't like that!!!
