hi everyone - i'm new and not sure what to do but hope everyone is good today- i need to pick everyone's brains- i have had osteo-arthritis for 8 years since i was 35 and was told to get to 40 and have partial knee replacements - so i waited and waited got to 40 a couple of years ago and am still waiting .......but i fell over in the snow a ripped all the ligaments/tendons in my knee - my knee has moved over and is giving me grief- the surgeon says no knee replacement not now not ever knee in the wong place!! he will try a lateral release to line it back up but he is not hopeful-any ideas what to do next as 'i can do nothing for you' is not good *trace*

You poor thing, sounds very painful and frustrating!

I agree, I think a second opinion would ensure that you really are getting the best treatment. Ask them that if they can't to a knee replacement then what can they offer?

Hi Trace and welcome to the forum :D

I am sorry to hear what's happened to your knee  . how awful it all sounds! you must be still in a state of shock from what the surgeon said to you.

have you been given a date for this procedure and what to expect from having this type of op?

I've to have a TKR sometime in the future but don't know anything about the procedure you've described....

I hope some other peeps will come along soon who may be able to offer you advice.

no matter what Trace we will be around to listen and offer you support... so stick with us!

I have chronically painful knees (I have PA not OA) but as they look absolutely perfect I will not be getting new ones. I can't help at all but I do wish you well. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on. DD
Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben

    Hi

A surgeon who say he can do nothing for you regarding age is an extremely obstructive person and you need to seek a second opinion.....I got told earlier this year nothing could be done for my arthritic knee even though have been a sufferer right from my teens....And anyway, i got told if I had fallen over, had a sports injury then they had to treat you accordingly but it seems it difers in different hospitals....
Good luck with the lateral release, isnt that where they lift the knee cap, change position of it? Correct me if im wrong....Im sorry its on your birthday, what a bummer!!
Im now seeing someone in Wrightington (im in Lake District) who is conisdering a half knee replacemtn but treating me like a person and not an annoyance....
    All the best..

    Hi Trace,

It hard to do a tkr if the ligaments are not there to support the new joint properly and maybe the lateral release needs to be doe and sorted before he can help..... however.....

I would ask to see someone else purely cus you need someone who is hopeful they can make it better not like this guy seems to be. To me its paramount you have the best chance of success and also that your surgeon is someone you can put your faith. To me this guy isn't committee and well for me surgery has to be done by someone I know thinks they can get it right.

I would honestly ask your gp and see if another opinion would be better and maybe from a center of excellence for either ligaments or knees? Nice to meet you and I hope you can get something a bit more optimistic sorted. Cris x

    Hi Trace and welcome,

your surgeon doesn't sound very positive thinking does he?

I think you have to take this one step at a time (no pun intended!) you need to see the results of the lateral release and work with physios etc to get the ligaments, tendons and muscles in your knee to as good as they possibly can be. Then reapproach the surgeon or ask for a second opinion re a TKR.

What timing to have your op on your birthday ... those gowns are hideous arent they? I hope you do get some nice presies to while away the recuperation period post op. Keep us updated.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.
