Hi I havn't had that sort of operation, but I've had major surgery in my abdomun. I was allowed a bath as soon as I could get in, although the first time the nurses lifted me in!!! But that was 25 years ago, the hospital was very old and didn't have much in the way of showers, in fact none at all on my ward!
Does your GP have a practise nurse who could tell you over the phone? I'd ring and ask the receptionist if anyone could help they get a bad press, but some of them are fantastic at sorting things out!

Hi Tony
I was allowed to have a shower as soon as the stitches were out, but no bath til after 12 week check as it `breaks` the 90 degree angle rule. My shower is not over the bath , it is a separate cubcle so i didn`t need to lift my leg too high. If yours is over a bath this may put 90 degree rule at risk so maybe check with the hospital/GP.

If the clips are out and there is no sign of a hole in the wound or infection then why not? With a wet room the 90 degrees don't apply! Don't wash the scar tho, only pat it dry and keep it well-oiled to aid elasticity when healing. Gently massage baby oil over the scarred area - it should help the scar to flex and minimise puckering. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi
I would definately say no no no.
only reasonbeing is that i recently had knee surgery and even though the stitches have disolved nad the wound is healed the scar tissue is very thin and with the warm water can make it even thinnner. i was advised by my consultant and physio not to bath for 12 weeks following surgery and to take showers only.
with regular surgery i dont think it is as serious as a bone operation. the last thing you want is for germs to get in there and infect your hip.
of course just my opinion. xx0 -
Hi
Another different opinion I had a THR and was allowed to take a shower from the beginning {waterproof dressing} even had a shower in the hospital and was only there 3 days.
It was the bath.....was not allowed into the bath for 6 weeks

Hi Tonysp, if the wound has healed - showers are fine. If not totally healed then you could whack on a water proof dressing before showering.
WHAT IS THE 90 DEGREE RULE!!!! Are you serious!!!
It is the bain of hip op patients, who are advised not to bend the hip joint beyond a right angle - eg when getting out of a chair - slide your foot forwards first etc no sitting on low chairs, not bending down to pick things up/put on your shoes and socks etc Are you not under such restrictions? My physio did say that some surgeons are phasing out this rule ... which is supposed to protect the new joint from dislocating until the muscles etc have recovered and the joint is well embedded.

SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Don't forget tonesp is in Spain - could all be different there! How did the shower go? Feel refreshed? I am HUGELY envious of the wet room - Easyjet here I come, I wanna to go see tonesp! DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi Tonesp
Are the restrictions different in Spain?
As Speedy says they are dreadful for hip patients.
Cant even sit on a chair and bend forward to pick a cup of coffee up.
Getting in and out of car is something else that has to me mastered

Hi tonesp
I do think there are different opinions for everything which is confusing. I had a small op on my stump a couple of months ago and when the stitches came out even though it is still open (long story) they say let the shower just trickle down wound. But do not apply soap and dab dry with a different towel.
They also used to bathe it with water from kettle but then changed mind and was straight from tap. :?
confusion all round eh :?
I say if in doubt use a leg sock (plastic comes all way up leg)
Hope you enjoy the shower

I was never told anything about it .The only thing I was told was to use a high chair not to walk without crutches and a list of muscle stretching excerises.Think the other bits are common sense For the last 6 months can't put socks on Had to adopt a strategy for getting in and out of a chair.Anything too extreme is too painful to do My wife is brilliant for helping me with difficult tasks0
