Hi All

Saw GP today and been reffered to pain clinic and for some physio. Knee x-rays show changes in the knees but only what you would expect in someone my age! So thats it. OA in hands, knees, feet, back, right hip and shoulder. Got the usual painkillers (co-codamol & tramadol) but they dont touch the pain in my knees. Finding it extremely difficult walking and stairs are a nightmare. Knees very stiff and painful first thing in the morning and have fallen quite a few times with the sudden sharp pain. Doc says Im not at the stage that requires surgery yet. How long do they expect me to continue like this. Cant get in/out of bath, cant wash my own hair, need help to get in/out of bed. Im normally very strong, glass always half full kind of person but this is seriously getting me down. A nice hot shower and early to bed and see if tomorrow brings any joy. Sorry for moaning but feel better getting this off my chest.

Regards
Trisha

I know what you mean about painful knees: I have a different form of arthritis but pain is pain.

Are you using any form of support when walking? If both knees are affected at least two sticks, one on each side, can be beneficial, though crutches do give better support and stability. I cannot do without mine, they remove the fear factor in walking! Using them is, however, dependant upon the state of your hands. If I am teaching you to suck eggs then I apologise most sincerely. If, on the other hand, you are not using any form of support it is an idea worth considering. When things are really bad I even use mine to help me up and down the stairs - which I normally do like a three year old anyway!

Cossett yourself tonight, spoil yourself with something lovely and I hope you get some comfortable sleep. I wish you well. DD

    Hi patriciamary

If you have to put up with it then at least you can ask for some help - maybe referral to OT for some help to get in and out of the bath, as Dd says maybe walking aids of some sort.

I know the pain is bad and sometimes it is not time to operate yet. I have heard of this, but things can be done to make life easier.

Maybe even one of the A/C managing pain courses?

I am so sorry, but please don't feel alone - we are here.

    Love

    Hi
Sorry dont really know about knees.....its hips with me ...had one THR but as DD says pain is pain.
I think we are always stiff in the morning before we get moving.
Was it your GP that said you wernt ready for TKR?
If it was ...say you want a referral to a consultant.....sorry if I've picked it up wrongly
    Good luck

[Hi Trisha i found i could cope will pain anywhere else but in my knees strenth of pain killers went up and up and all stopped being effective after a few weeks - went to local disabilty people and got the house kitted out bath boards etc i still go up the stairs like a 2 year old hands and feet -promise you i don't do the crawl in public but curse loadly about the amount of stairs every where instead!anyway heat i always go to bed with a hot wheat bag on my knees and whenever they get stiff seems to do the job better than anything else but it took me ages to find a balance between doing too much and too little as both caused PAIN

Hi DD, Toni, Hileena & rileytra

Posted this on Tuesday afternoon and was feeling very down.

Tuesday night I became very sick, running (well hobbling) to the bathroom, breaking out in sweats and felt as if I was going to pass out. OH eventually helped me to bed about 11 o'clock when I felt it was safe to leave the bathroom, never slept a wink with tummy pain and constant feeling of needing to go to bathroom. Spent Wednesday in PJs and felt so weak I could hardly make a cup of tea. Wednesday evening I managed to eat a small amount and went to bed early. Had a good nights sleep and although I still feel a bit weak and washed out I am definately on the mend. Had the same thing 3 weeks ago and the doc said it was an infection and gave me antibiotics, so they have not managed to kill the infection or its back again. I have never felt so bad, I wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy. (well maybe those people who consider arther to be nothing to bother about)

I dont usually let things get me down, but really felt bad on Tuesday I can only think that this sickness was lurking in the background and was pulling me down. I am now getting back to being mentally fit, so thanks for the support, much appreciated.

    Regards

Oh poor you! Bugs are nasty and they can take a while to clear. I am glad you are feeling a little brighter - let's hope you can build on that tomorrow and then enjoy your weekend. Take care. DD
