Hello All,

Please could any of you come back to me who have had an ankle fusion operation as I am being given conflicting advice on whether this works well by my doctor and podiatrist. I have osteo arthritis of the talonavicular joint .

I am a 73yr old woman and have had this problem for 3 years and have had injections and used drugs to control the pain - which haven't worked.

Many thanks in advance.

Joan

My friend and I have both had an ankle fused. Hers is very good, the joint looks pretty normal, she can wear regular shoes, she doesn't have any pain. Mine is not so good, but then my ankle was badly deformed before surgery. I can only wear sandals, and can't stand for more than a minute. You never know how these things will turn out, I believe that for most people they are very successful, but there's always that slight risk.

If you go ahead and they offer you a nerve block or an epidural instead of a general anaesthetic, I'd seriously consider it. I had a nerve block, and half an hour after surgery I was sitting up in bed with a cup of tea and toast-normally I'd be throwing up! The numbness lasted 24 hours, so I missed the worst of the pain, and I had none of that total exhaustion that you can experience in the days after a general anaesthetic.

    Good luck!

    Hi Gardener

My brother in law had a fusion a few years back and has been really pleased with the results.

I know the recovery is slow (Alan said the same) as he is a manual worker he was very worried, but has been so pleased since.

Do let us know what you decide :)

    Love

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.
