ive not long started taking the amitriptyline myself but from what ive been told it can take a while to get into your system and to bare with it. i started on 10mg which kept me comfortable to around 2-3 am so my gp said i could up it to 20 but like yourself, for a while i felt more awake than when i took 10mg :?

im not sure if this is correct, maybe someone will correct me if im wrong, but ive read not to suddenly stop taking them.

hope they have some effect soon x

TJC, i have been taking amitryptaline for some time now ( a few years) I also take 20mg I was told by my gp that they are to hep with the pain at night which helps you to not wake up so much during the night. They have never made me feel sleepy but they do help it not be quite so painful when i turn over in the night.

    Hi TJC :D

I agree with what others have said. I've been on Amatriptyline for a few years now (so long I can't remember  ) and for me it definitely does help with easing nerve pain .

Not all drugs work equally for us but maybe you need to give it a bit longer before making any decision about stopping it?.... not sure if it has to be tapered off but your doc will advise you on that one!

hope you do start to see some benefit TJC. :D

10 or 20mg isn't an anti-depressant dose and you can stop taking it. Of course tell your GP first. A lot of ppl are on doses around 60-80mg and then I believe you need to taper the dose.

I tried 20mg at first but found I was having metabolic problems (like a hypo in a diabetic if I didn't give into the carb cravings) so I dropped it to 10mg. I didn't get any effect at that dose so I just stopped taking it. I was prescribed it as a preventative for migraine and at both doses it didn't work!

Hi, I'm on the same dose, the first few weeks it knocked me out all day! I just sat, unable to concentrate to read and fell asleep more than once with a cup of tea in my hand, soon woke up when the cold wet tea reached the skin! Now I find the the dose usually works, but on some days it just doesn't but, I get more sleep now so its OK. Could they not allow you to take an extra tablet on nights that are really bad, like after a painful day? I admit I do that, not often but just sometimes. Surely, that would't hurt you? Why not check it out with the doc? I may well be doing the wrong thing, so don't take my word for it. Good luck, love Suexx

I take 25mg and have done for a few years now.

I find the effects have been cumulative if that's the right word? I take it early about 8pm and am asleep for ten/eleven. It works well for me as a relaxant which is what I need when I am in pain.

In addition Cathy it is a good prophylaxis for my migraine :D I am sorry it dint work for you. My daughter is on a beta-blocker to prevent hers - so far so good

    Love

    Hi :):)

I have recently been put on this by my gastro for IBS D to try to slow my body down. It has quite a few uses, this drug and in high doses is given for depression. I take 20mg and was warned by the gastro that it would take a goodly time to begin its good work. I also take the meds about 8.00 pm and this suits me when going to bed around midnight. I fall asleep almost immediately some nights. :) I did not used to sleep too well, so it is a working in both ways for me!

My doc said I could go upto 50mg but I am fine on the 20mg. I would of course ask for guidance from my gastro or Gp if I felt it was not working at any time. My gastro put me on 10mg to see how I was on it and after a week he suggested putting it up to 20mg.

I wonder what time you take the amitriptyline.

    Luv

    Dear Joan

I am sorry that the med did not work for you. I too was instructed by the gp/gastro that you have to slowly come off this drug and if increasing the dosage this should also be done gradually.

    Hi

I take the same dosage as you and can take up to 3 a night - but I only do this if I'm feeling really rough.

What time do you take them? I generally take mine between 9-10pm at night and I'm out like a light until the next morning.

    Regards

I take 75mg of Amitriptyline every evening have done for about 6 years now my DR tried to take me off of them but felt so poorly he put me back on them and along with Gabapentine for nerve pain connected to my SMA and OA they seem to help me sleep although i do take a while to drop off, I do know that if you come off of them quickly you can get a lot of emotional problems they also take a while to kick in so stopping and only taking them now and again is not going to be of any real benefit,
