Hey Everyone

I realised how much things have gotten worse for me as I decided to go out with mum and dad to shop....I did think we were only going to one place, Morrison's which we did, and they browse more than me - I think cos of my leg I go in get what I want, no messing and straight out again...Well midway through I asked could I push the trolley as had just had stick, my leg were getting sore so i did to get more support from trolley, and we made it through checkouts...Then mum says "fancy going to Poundstretcher?"...I said okay....We only were in the shop for about 10 mins, and although they had quirky things, nice stuff to look at, my leg was hurting like hell.....I had to ask dad for car key and got a drink and sat in car for last half hour....
I suppose i knew my leg was worse but I couldnt handle two shops, ie about an hour and half walking at slow pace....It compounded to me what i can no longer do...Bit worried as off to Inverness for neice's birthday next week and my sister has asked will i go out with them...Well they can shop till they drop but I now know i cant, physically...May have to get a scooter, do you need BB to hire one...

    Hi Elaine,

When I do the food shopping I have a trolley of my own and go around at the speed I want. Whoever takes me does theirs and then comes to find me to help, if necessary. If I finish first (rare) I just sit and wait for them.

When going for other shopping I have lots of stops and sits (I don't waste a bench) and sometimes park myself for a coffee stop and recuperation. Again, whoever I'm with hubby or friends will fall in with whatever's best for me.

I think to hire a shopmobility vehicle you have to fill in a form which is signed by your doc, but I'm not sure as I've not gone down that route yet. Others will know and advise I'm sure.

Like you I struggle with shopping so don't hang about either. I think I have just enough energy and fresh joints(!) to grab the basics.

I haven't had shop mobility so don't know the hiring criteria.

Good luck next week It is difficult to get people to understand the restrictions I'm afraid. Explain how painful walking is and how you need frequent rests and hopefully they will understand.

    Hi Elaine :D

I can empathise with what you've said. :? I don't go food shopping anymore... do it all online delivery. That helps me conserve my energy for the 'nicer' shopping expeditions.

I do the same as Legs.. and family are used to leaving me with coffee while they go off and plunder. It's amazing what you see sat sitting watching the world go by!

I haven't used shopmobility either..yet.. although my daughters are hatching a cunning plan, which I think might include a scoota, for the next time we go to Silverburn Shopping Centre in Glasgow.

do what is comfortable for you and that helps you enjoy your trips out.

Hi Elaine, oh this all sounds so familiar - you realise how compromised you are when out with others. The pain of walking, dodging others, standing in queues when shopping - takes any pleasure away. Roll on your op! You don't need a blue badge to hire a scooter. You usually need proof of your identity. It's a good idea to ring in advance - some places you need to book - and they can tell you the process involved/

    Hi Iris

Oh God...Silverburn Shopping Centre...My brother and his gf seem to spend most weekends either at McArthur Glen or Silverburn or some other kind of centre...I personally dont like them as all the clothes shops all only go to a size 16 which they deem as "large" and think other ones are poncy and well overpriced

I think i will have to sniff out the likes of coffee places such as Costa n such and see if they do soya products as dont have dairy ether...Pain aint i?

    Hi speedy

Well its not going to be the kind where i know where im going, just out with evryone and trying to find seats n such at place....I agree it takes all the pleasure out of shopping when youre in pain, even when in likes of Boots waiting in queue or in M & S and all the seats are taken....

Thanks for mentioning will need proof of ID.....

Online shopping for food is the way forward. I live in a tenement (3rd floor) and the only way I can deal with tins, carto, cat litter and potatoes is with the nice Sainsbury's man carrying it up the stairs for me.

So, that means I can do other shopping at my own pace when I want to and am fit for it.

(you a fellow glaswegian by the way?)

    Hi Donnas

Um I was born in Belshill but have lived in lake district for well over 30years...I will be honest i dont know much of Glasgow as havent been there since was little, even my dad when we went to Firhill for a football match about 6years ago didnt recognise the place and he grew up there.....
I dont live alone but if i did online shopping would have to be an option...But i know what you mean re tenements, i used to hate my granny's, used to be dark n horrid....

    Hi Elaine
No...you dont need a blue badge for shopmobility.
If its a shopping center they usually want proof of identity, couple of mug shots  .....ours does anyway. Then you fill a form in and thats it. We pay £3 a year to be a member and then £1 for half of a day and £2 for the full day.....full day is from 9am to 9pm......not likely to want a full day
I ended up buying a 2nd hand one myself but it only goes in OH car. I couldnt dismantle it so if I go by myself i hire one if not OH drops me off with the "paddymobile" and pickes me up again.
They vary....but some dont charge at all once you have filled a form in.
I dont do grocery shopping either.....cant carry things and only use the scooter for browsing around and maybe some retail therapy
It actually makes it pleasurable believe it or not.
Let us know what happens or what you do

    Hi Hileena

Oh gosh im only going up to scotland for a few days so dont want to join up for a years use, and havent got any more passport photos as need 2 for my interview.....I thought you could just get one for an hour or so and show BB as proof of ID?
My dad keeps joking saying he will shove me round in a wheelchair, hmm not funny dad...Unless someone really needs a wheelchair i dont think they should be used you know they are there for people worse off than me...I mean i can walk, okay not very far or fast but i still can, some cant....

Will update you after next week...

I agree with you about the wheelchair....I've got a book with places where you can hire scooters. Where are you going in Scotland and I'll try and find the nearest ones for you. If i can find the book  I was given it in Northern Ireland when I was over...I had my own scooter with me and just popped into talk to these poeople in a shopping center. They didnt charge anything, not sure what they wanted as far as a form was concerned but you could use it all around this town {not a very big town but a hilly one....not restricted to the shopping center} so they are all different.

    Hi elaine
i find taking a list if food shopping helps- stops the mucking around -and i also take the kids with me to reach the high stuff and the low stuff andi i just lean on the trolley - hate going to town cause the walking to the shops round the shops just kills - christmas will be done on line this year i think - also we swapped holiday this year from dorset to norfolk as norfolk is supposed to be flat- stayed in the only place with a hill!how does that work - but i would still be at the bottom of that moster hill in lyme regis if we went to dorset

but on a positive note slow speed for hour and an half you did 3-4 miles - thats 1/3 of a half marathon lots of people can not walk that far with good knees etc

    Hi Trace

Oh i dont have kids or anything to do things like that in shops, sometimes got to ask other customers to get me things like milk in low cages.
Um re my shopping trip the other day...I deffo didnt walk for an hour and a half, I was out of the house in total for an hour and a half (we went out about 4 and got in for 5.30) and I sat for 30 mins of our trip....So im not quite the athlete you think I am, I can only manage about 10-15mins slow pace.....At times on that trip the trolley was taking my full weight and was more like a big walking frame! My knee is far from good...

i understand completely, i have mine delivered but its nice to get out some time !!
all i wanted a couple of weeks ago was to take in some photos to be developed i thought ill manage that, so went in to AsdA.
i thought they took the card and returned it to you, no you have to do it all manually on there upload mashine.
oooooooooo what a mistake !! :? i stood for a short time attempting to do it i asked for help from a tutting assistant. i cannot stand for long at all so i asked the shop assistant for a chair as the pain in my back and legs was becoming unbeareable!!
she said no i cannot give you a chair to sit on i asked why? as she had two behined the counter. :?
no i carnt she said due to health and safety YOU MAY FALL OFF IT!
I took out the card and made a slow painful exsit !! :x
iv been sitting on chairs for 51 years and not fell off one yet!!
but i do fall occasionally from pain and stiffnes walking and standing!
good one asda jobs worth or what
