Just been diagnosed with OA in the spine. I am 44 and just did not expect this. Long story story but over the past 13 years I have had my thyroid removed, hysterectomy and about to have my tenth operation on my foot....pretty unlucky. I have continued to remain in work, struggled to travel in but got there. To get this now has really knocked me.
I have been on Naproxen and Co-codomal for quite a while due to foot problem. These were not helping the back so my doctor has taken me off them and put me on Bu-Trans (now on my fourth day). I am struggling in the morning and have to use a hot water bottle and a couple of paracetamol to get me started. still get twinges during the day etc.
Sorry to go on but I would really appreciate any advice on Bu-trans and how to cope with OA.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi, sorry you have just been diagnose with OA. Im 43 with OA in neck/spine plus most of my other joints.
I was put on butrans patches when i first got dx with OA & i got up to 20mg but they made me so ill i had to come off them.
As you proberbly know they need to be changed every 7 days & if it comes off replace it with a new one or it will stop working.
there are plenty of alternatives if it doesnt work for you so dont panick. ive been on slow release zomorph (morphine) & now on slow release Tramadol & ive tried loads of other meds its just finding what sorts you & works for you.
Pacing yourself is also very important, so plenty of rest inbetween working, housework & days out etc. Also keeping the muscles strong helps with joints.
Its always a shock when you get a diagnoses like this, take some time for it to sink in & read as much as you can about it. theres loads of info on here & of course theres a great bunch on here for anything your unsure of.
Hot baths/showers can help to get you moving in the morning
& paracetamols & ibuprofen are ok to take with the butrans.
I hope this is of some help,I can think of much else at the mo but im sure someone else will be along soon that has a workable brain good luck with the op.

Hi there, I have got inflammatory arthritis so can't really help, but wanted to to say hello and welcome.
It's very quiet in here tonight, must all be out with the fireworks, bonfires and baked potatoes.
I'm sure those who can help will be along later. In the meantime hang in there.......there are lots with OA.

Thank you Debs and Annie.
Debs, I have previously taken tramadol but they made me feel down. As I am sure you know it's hard trying different tablets until you get to the ones that work.
Plenty of fireworks going off here tonight.
Thanks x0 -
Hi Play and welcome,
I don't have any experience of Bu-tans but I do have OA.
I think you should ring the disability employment adviser at Job centre plus and get them to refer you to Access to Work under DDA, as then you would qualify with help to get to work - they would pay your taxis for example.
Heat pads and warm baths, plenty of rest and getting your meds to optimum are the best way I know of helping OA.
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Good evening Play, and another welcome to the site, I only joined recently but glad I did, lots of good advice from folk in the same position etc.. I am 42 and have OA in my lower spine, had it for quite a few yrs now and the painkillers have gradually had to get stonger over time.. I have not been on the ones you mentioned before the Blutran?? I was on Dihydrocodiene and Nabumatone for a lot of yrs, they stopped working altogether this yr so at the minute I am in the middle of finding something that works, currently Diclofenac, Tramadol, Paracetamol and Hydroxcloroquine, although that one is for the Rheumatoid I now have in my wrists.. Oh the joys of it all.. I remember being told I had the OA all them yrs ago clear as day, I had tried to get them to give me a diagnosis for a long time but it was still upsetting when they did so you're not alone..
Keep on posting, also join us in the chit-chat forum, we can usually be found hanging around in Vals' virtual cafe where all refreshments are calorie free!
As someone else mentioned, try and keep your back muscles as strong as possible, this WILL help..
