Hi everyone!

Hope you are all ok!
Has anyone heard of Beline Capsules. A friend of a friend takes them and swears by them. I am tempted to buy them as children over 6 can take them. I'm just worried as Frankies currently on Methotrexate that I really dont feel is working for him. He's been on it for 4 months now and i can honestly say he's no better. The reviews are excellent and although it's totally natural I'm scared to 'mess' about with them.

Your views would be great!

Hi Michelle, I would ask your pharmacist, even natural remedies can interact with prescribed meds.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

Yeah, Speedy say the right thing. You should consult with specialist doctor before taking any medicine. This medicine is good working but it may have some side effects, which will increase another great pain. So, do not take decision yourself and just contact with doctor.
    Thanks...

Hi I have been taking Beline with no apparent ill effects over the last nine months.
I got various aches and pains after finishing prednisilone for polymyalgia they certainly work and do so for many people I know on them. My pharmacist says they look ok but I do sometimes worry why they work so well.

Hi, I was extremely sceptical when my daughter suggested taking these capsules, BUT, I have not taken my diclofenic since starting on Beline capsules, they are amazing. The only downfall is the price, BUT, I would much prefer to take something like this than take conventional medicine,as they all seem to have horrific side effects. Please consult a chemist (?) and get his opinion.
After much reseach regarding my rheumatoid athritis, I also found cutting out all red meat and all dairy helped immensly. I know this might be too difficult for a child, but, it worked wonders for me. Good luck

    Hello Frankiesmum

I am so sorry that the mtx does not seem to be helping your son and I understand that you would do anything to help him feel better. But just to add to the previous words of warning, please be aware that the UK Medicines and Healthcare Regulation Agency (MHRA) has also been investigating and On 7th September 2001 they issued the following statement based on their findings:

"Beline capsules are an illegal unlicensed medicinal product which cannot legally be sold in the UK without first obtaining
either a marketing authorisation (MA) or traditional herbal registration (THR). The distributor, FocusHR Limited, has agreed to
discontinue sale of the product in the UK."

The link below will take you to the MHRA website which details their findings on this product.

    http://www.mhra.gov.uk/Safetyinformation/Generalsafetyinformationandadvice/Herbalmedicines/Herbalsafetyupdates/Allherbalsafetyupdates/CON129016

    Hope this is of help.

Sorry just re-read my message and the MHRA announcement was in 2011 NOT 2001 - typo, sorry.

Hi, New to this forum. I have osteo arthritis in my lower and upper spine, neck, hands and feet. Bit of a crock really...LOL ( I had lower spinal surgery in 2009 which left me with more pain and numbness and cramping in my legs!) I have had 4 spinal nerve block injections which only give temporary relief... I also had a total hip replacement in 2011. I was constantly in pain. I was using Beline capsules for about 4 months and felt great, I tried them as diclofenac and ibuprofen gave me an inflamed stomach and my GP took me off them and prescribed co-codomol which has the most swful side effects: chronic constipation, dizziness, confusion and constantly feeling exhaused and disinterested in doing anything. Soon after I stopped the awful pain and lethargy returned. I have read the MHRA report, but have been taking Beline again for the last month and the difference in my whole being is amazing - I am pain free and have amazing energy, I can work out at the gym, swim and walk for pleasure. i have been checking the MHRA website frequently as FOCUS say they have removed offending ingredients and have re-applied for authorisation... I am hoping this is the case, but wonder if the capsules will be as effective... My problem is do I continue to take them and lead a normal life or go back to feeling constanly ill and in pain.... I have decided to continue to take them, but keep checking the MHRA website. if anyone has any further updates on the situation I would be grateful to hear.

Hello LesleyW and welcome to the forum.

I've never heard of Beline capsules so I googled it  Well, I can't give medical advice as I'm not a medic but, speaking purely as a long-standing RA sufferer, I wouldn't touch these things with a barge-pole.

It appears they contain, among other things, a local anaesthetic, steroids, an NSAID and anti-histamines  I see the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society has given them a firm nono for their sufferers.

In your situation, I'd go back to my GP and have a good talk with him/her. If you don't like cocos (and many of us have few, if any, problems with them), there are other paindullers out there whose ingredients are checked and safeguarded. We would all like a pain-free, energetic lifestyle but, if these tablets were as safe as you hope and as effective as you say, we'd all be on them. prescribed by our docs.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hello and welcome from me too.

I am sorry you are struggling so much and I can understand why you are in a dilemma about the Beline capsules given that they help you so much.

BUT, I'm with Sticky on this - and I fear you could really be doing yourself great harm by continuing to take them, particularly if you are doing so without your GP being aware. I see that one of the ingredients is some kind of steroid - and long term use of steroids carries all sorts of risks. And Piroxicam, listed as one of other ingredients is an anti-inflammatory just like the Diclofenac and Ibuprofen which have given you stomach problems in the past and which should always be taken with a prescribed stomach protector. I would also be very distrustful of the company's claims that they are removing the prohibited ingredients - given that this company claimed originally that the Beline capsules were "all natural" or something like that. I see that the company is also still selling the capsules online, stating that they are "herbal" and publishing an ingredients list which makes no mention of the prohibited ingredients.

I do have a couple of suggestions however. Piroxicam is listed as one of the ingredients in Beline capsules - and your GP may well be able to prescribe Piroxicam tablets for you to try. I know that Piroxicam is also available on prescription as an anti-inflammatory gel. If you do end up with the tablets though, you do need to make sure that you ask for a stomach protector to take alongside - eg Omeprazole or Lanzoprazole.

Re the co-codamol - I too had real trouble with it and my GP has now prescribed Liquid Oromorph instead. Although I don't actually find it as effective for the pain as the Co-codamol, it does help me and has not given me any problems so far. It might be an idea to talk to your GP about alternative pain meds if the co-cos are not right for you. Some people are prescribed "pain patches" which may be an alternative.

I would urge you to talk to your GP asap and to tell him/her about the Beline capsules and how you are feeling. You could also take a print out of the MHRA finding on the Beline capsules as a starting point for discussion.

    Good luck!
