Finally saw the hand specialist yesterday and agreed to go ahead with a right thumb mcp fusion and Brunelli procedure to stabilize the left hand quarter of the right hand to be done at the same time.
I asked if there was anything other than fusion that could be done to the thumb but he said no as it is so unstable.
I am now getting contant aches in my right buttock and right foot large toe joint as well which click every time I walk on it. Basically it seems at 33 everything is starting to collapse!
My next quest is to research stem cells and follow this emerging science.
Haven't got dates for the op yet but I will keep you all posted.

    Hi there

Glad you and the consultant have agreed that you will have the op.

Hope you don't have to wait too long for the appointment.

    Good luck

Hello righthandman - well done on finding us again! I hope it all goes well with the operation, how much time will you have to take off work? I am sorry that other problems are rearing their ugly heads but 'tis the nature of the beast, I'm afraid. Keep in touch, let us know the date when you get it - I hope it's soon. DD

Hi righthand man ... 'tis good to see you posting. :D

I do hope you don't have to wait too long for your op... did the surgeon give you any idea of the waiting time?

It will be so worth having the fusion done and even though there might be a little cost in flexibility and movement it will resolve the gnawing pain in your hand .

good luck too with the research into stem cell therapy! you are the right age as I understand it...so please let us know how you get on. :!:

we all benefit from the experience and knowledge of others on the forum as well as wanting to be supportive :!: . :D

    Hi Righthandman,
At last you are making progress. At least you now know there was no other option for you. Let us know when you get your date for the op.
It might be an idea to see a podiatrist to find out if insoles could help with your foot and toe.
    Take care,

Thanks for all your support. I was told by the consultant that it will be a month in plaster and then splint for a month and then another month of limited use. Basically 12 weeks. I can't stand still for 10 minutes let alone 3 months so this will be an interesting time. Waiting time is about 2-5 months for the op.
I am holding onto the thought that sometime in the near future cell technology will have developed enough to grow cartilage and ligament tissue within ones own body and I shall be using recovery time to research this.Thanks.

I suspect you will find the recovery time a real trial but the time will pass, it always does, and hopefully, at the end of it, you will have a much more comfortable life. Hold onto that thought! I wish you well, and do let us know how you are getting on with it all once it's done. DD

Hi Righthandman, good that you have both procedures done together.

At first your recovery time after the op will be all about the challenge of doing things wearing the cast/splint etc .. everything will take longer and that will help fill the time. Once you have cracked all of that - as you say you can research the stem cell treatment.

Hope you don't have to wait too long to have a pain free hand again.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.
