Hi

I was very excited yesterday because I met Dame Joan Bakewell. She came to open a new art exhibition at the Quad in Derby, and I was one of the lucky people to attend the official opening. All the works of art have been selected by a panel of older people in the community from the Art's Council collection. They include paintings by L.S. Lowry and David Hockney, as well as many other wonderful artists, so the exhibition is well worth a visit if you are in the area. ( It's a free exhibition )

I have always admired Dame Joan Bakewell, and she was just as charming as I had imagined. She said that art is important because it opens your eyes to the world around you, and that it helps you to see things in a different way. I agree with her. What do you think :?:

Thanks Joan. It will stay in my memory. Isn't it strange how when you see someone in reality instead of on TV, they always seem smaller :?: I was surprised how petite Joan Bakewell is. I had always thought of her as being taller than she is. She is very attractive still, at the age of 77.

I don't want to be a Dame.....it's not a very nice title is it? conjures up images of old hags or pantomime men in drag.... Not likely to become one though anyway

Ah well - I expect she was lovely Joan and that you will remember meeting her for a very long time.

    Love

Thanks Tony. It's a strange title, isn't it? We never say a woman has received a damehood in the same way that a man has received a knighthood. It tends to make you think of pantomime dames too.

    Hi Joan

She was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Not 'received a damehood'.

Helen Mirren on becoming a Dame said, "My street cred is gone."

But it is always exciting to meet people that you see on TV and see if they match your image of them.

    Hi Joseph

I don't think Helen Mirren's street cred would ever go, dame or no dame. She is a brilliant actress.

I have only met a few famous people, but it is interesting to see them in real life. One person I have met is Darcy Bussell, the well-known ballerina. She was every bit as elegant as I expected, but very friendly and charming.

Hope you are feeling OK, Joseph. Take care

That is a coincidence, Del. She is a lovely person, as well as a fantastic ballet dancer.

I like your Salvador Dali quote- very appropriate when meeting Darcy Bussell :D She really is perfection in movement and grace. :D I'm afraid that I will never reach it, no matter how hard I try :(
