Alcohol intolerance?

Hi.
I'm on Mtx for PsA. but as it was a special occasion on Sat night (Mum's 70th birthday), I 'treated' myself to a couple of drinks, well spaced out during the night. My rheumy nurse said it was fine to have a couple, when I saw her last time.
Well, I was ill with stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhoea all night, and felt dreadful the whole day after too.
I know it wasn't food poisoning or anything like that, so has anyone else ever encountered this after being on Mtx?
I have never been a big drinker, and this is the first alcoholic drink I have had in over 6 months.
I would be interested to know if anyone else has developed an intolerance to alcohol since starting drug therapy.

Hi
I am so sorry that you had a bad night, how awful that you cant enjoy a couple of drinks once in a while.
Have you been on the meds for a while, if not maybe when you get used to them, you could have a drink now and then.
Sorry Im not being much help am I

Hi
I know of a young bloke who goes to our hydrotherapy pool and he's only in his 30's and has rheumatoid arthritis...He says he hasnt touched a drop of alcohol for about a year now....

Oh poor you
I havent heard of this and if the nurse said it would be ok.....
wonder if it was a genuine and coincidental 'bug' and worth trying a teeny weeny drink sometime again (with the nurses permission of course), ??

As meth is processed by the lliver the 'old' view used to be that one could/should not stress that organ further by giving it alcohol to deal with. Views are softening now, and the odd glug is permissable - if the liver can tolerate it. Are you on regular blood tests? Has that given you a picture of how your liver reacts? Your experience does sound like an intolerance to something but whether that something was your two drinks I really don't know. That reactions does sound more like a tummy bug kinda thing, but I ain't a doc. Perhaps you should check with your rheumatology team? Do you have a helpline you could ring? Get your bloods done this week too - whether they are due or not. I wish you well. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Thanks for all the replies folks.
The last blood test I had done did show a 'blip' in the liver results, but the rheumy nurse said that a slightly abnormal test can happen once in a while, but it was still ok to have a drink or two.
Maybe my body isn't working as it should, hence the bad reaction.
I'll wait until the next test is done, then depending on what shows up, I'll decide whether it's sensible to drink alcohol at all.
Granted, I'm not a drinker, but it would be nice to feel that you can have a drink with friends now and again.
I try and lead as normal a life as I can, but sometimes Arthur just doesn't want to help out!0 -
Hi Nanarose, I stopped drinking about 16 years ago, at that point I was on a lot of dihydrocodiene and Nabumatone, niether of which mix with alcohol well, I would only have to have a mouthful and I was drunk, literally, and would suffer for days..
I drank enough in my teens and early twenties to make up for it though
I really can't see me bothering with it again, I would maybe have a drink once a year up until last year when I was very ill with it..
I am daft enough without the booze anyway, :?

Hi,
I have just started on Meth. The instructions I have got say you can have one unit of alcohol per day. Although I have decided for the sake of my liver not to have any alcohol the day I take it or the day after.
I have noticed alcohol doesn't really agree with me any more. I have never been a heavy drinker so it is not really an issue, but I enjoy a glass of wine with friends now and again.
I will play it by ear. I won't be that bothered if I have to give it up. Coffee on the other hand.........!!!
Thanks,
Masaka0
