Sore mouth, what's that all about?

Hi all, I know I have been posting a while now, so some might be aware of how things are for me, I have OA in knees and spine, probably hip too truth be known, but was diagnosed with RA (well, Sero-Neg) in my wrists in March this year, I wasn't given any advice or anything from the Rheumy about how different a disease it is from OA.. For quite a few weeks now I have had a sore mouth, not quite ulcers but sore, I find myself in the bad habit of biting the inside of my mouth too, I know I shouldn't but I don't realise I am doing it. Is it some weird side effect from meds? I heard that it could be the RA though..
I am not sure when I go back to the rheumy, no got my next appointment through yet.

I just keep putting bonj£la in my mouth, but it hasn't cured it.

Any help/advice is appreciated..

Cheers in advance.

    HI Tony

sorry you have a sore mouth ... it's no fun is it?

I have had my fair share of mouth problems in the past few years, but most have been put down to the Methotrexate I take making my gums more inflamed, and lowering my immunity to whatever leads to mouth ulcers

My dentist has given me good advice on looking after my mouth, so that might be a source of info for you.

ALso I find that recently I am also managing to bite my cheeks without knowing ..... and have had blood blisters on my tongue (from biting that I presume :? ) but haven't had it suggested that the RA is responsible :? :?

 Interesting ... I will add it to the list for the GP to answer on Wednesday :lol::lol::lol:

Thanks for the response Wonky, my OH printed something off about sero-neg from the living with athur site, it does mention sore mouth/skin..? Now I don't know if it's me biting that's making it worse or the fact that it's worse is making me bite it more, if you know what I mean.
I am not on the meth like you, I am on- Diclofenac, Tramadol, Paracetamol and Hydroxycloroquine which is the latest one that the Rheumy put me straight on when he diagnosed the sero-neg. He didn't actually give me the diagnosis, it's only because we noticed it on one of the letters...

    H Tony,

Oh sorry you got that... its no fun this bone stuff is it?

i am with Wonky and have had a few ulcers but prone to them anyway cus I have crohns and that's well able to give ulcers... its got a very big one in the stomach just now.... I hate it!:lol:

With the ,mouth ones,.... you have to stop chewing there you know... I do that and it can so easily become an ulcer but I also am obsessed with teeth cleaning and mouthwashes... silly but .... anyway the mouth washes seem to help stop it becoming an ulcer to a fairly good degree...

I would get it checked out though and please try to stop chewing...

Not sure if Hydroxy can do mouth ulcers but know both the sulfa and mtx can and does.

Hope it soon gets more comfortable for you. Cris x

Thanks Cris, your right, it's not much fun really eh?
    Still, gotta keep smiling :D
I will do my best to stop chewing my own face off, I use a mouthwash thing too so I think that is helping it not get any worse..

    Hi Tony,

If you see your gp in the meantime mention it cus it could be the drugs.... I don't know if the hydroxy does it at all but certainly the sulfa and mtx do.

Fingers crossed we both stop chewing at ourselves eh?! Cris x

Sorry about the editing... eyes are shift! least I can't chew them.... oh no..... yuk!

I go on Friday, if I think on I will ask, it's not a GP I regularly see and he's a bit erm, strange, but he's the only one at the surgey that can do the steroid injections in my knees..

    Cheers again Cris

Wish it was only my nails I chewed, I have the habit of chewing the skin on my fingers, don't know I'm doing it till it starts bleeding, then it usually goes a bit funny and I end up having to have it corterised..
I really am gonna have to stop the gnawing eh?

The sore mouth could be a side effect of the meds: I have never taken hydroxy, but surely it comes with a leaflet? Read that and see what it says about possible problems. It could also just be habit: if you have to be chewing at something, chew gum. If you are chewing raw patches in your skin well, the risk of infection shoots up, and if you start the immune-suppressant drugs you could get yourself into a right pickle. Break out the riglees, (it's cheaper than bonj) see if that helps, and talk to a doc about it. DD

Cheers DD, will get some gum!
As for the leaflets, I really don't like reading them to be honest, I once read one and it said 'sudden death may occur'!! Kinda put me off

I suspect that was under the heading of 'rare' side effects and, let's face it, sudden death may occur at any time anyway. Aquiring cancer is a possible side effect of humira: I care not one jot. They can cure that, they cannot cure arthritis. I always blithely assume I won't get side effects anyway! Thinking it over, bubblegum may be more fun! DD

It could be a side effect of your meds but also your mouth is a good barometer of your general health so if you are run down with RA , a cold or side effects of your meds it quite often shows in your mouth with mouth ulcers, sore patches etc, it also takes longer to heal if you nick it or scratch it with food or your teeth so can be quite sore. This should get back on keel as you feel better but good things like upping folic acid intake, eating things like marmite if you can stand it and using a good mouthwash (something like a medicated one like corsodyl if you can tolerate it or a good antiseptic one if you can’t), should also help
Hope that helps and you feel better soon

    Hi Tony, :D

I get a sore tongue and mouth ulcers from time to time... I think it's as Chrissie said and it's related to general health an wellbeing. Our bodies are under constant attack with the arther and wonky immune systems... and then on top of that the heavy meds that just add to all that we expect our systems to cope with.

Good luck with the steroid knee jabs on Friday :!: It's good that you have a GP willing to do them (even if he is 'strange').... mine won't and it means a trip to hospital each time. :?

Hi there, when I first started on MTX I suffered with a sore mouth a lot but my dentist put me on to difflam mouthwash which really helps, I find corsodyl too strong. Perhaps you could ask about it. It is the MTX which causes the sore mouth in the beginning. Hope this helps.

    Hi,
Sorry if this has been mentioneed.....I have quite a few ulcers.....dont know why..... I find bonjela is neither use nor ornament!!!! being a gel it just slips off
I find anbesol {liquid with anteseptic and anaesthetic} much better. You'll probably find it behind the counter not on the shelf.
Its a teething liquid and apparently mothers are using it too much on babies so its not sitting out {not here anyway} just bought a bottle last night LOL...I discovered it when mine were little and one of them is 31 now and the other one nearly 30 LOL....sheer accident that I tried it on an ulcer that length of time ago. Just a thought Love Hileena

Thanks to everyone for replying, sorry I can't do an individual response but my wrists are playing up today along with knees and back.. :x
I will take note of the things you have suggested and give them a try.
You would have thought that the Rheumy that diagnosed me would have maybe told me what to expect if anything, surely he must have realised that it's all new to me, only ever having OA before. Oh well, I have my trsuted pals on here to rely on! :D

    Thanks again

I like your thinking about being warned but there is a little flaw with that: we are all so different in how we react to arthritis (and the meds). I honestly don't think that consultants can warn us about everything: where would they start and where would they stop? I have had PA (similar to RA) for nearly 14 years, had virtually every drug under the sun since 2002 and never had a sore mouth. It's a major problem: we are all so different. I hope it does feel better soon - the continual chewing at bits of you sounds like a stress reaction to me - tho I am not a doc! Get blowing those bubbles, Tony! DD

Cheers DD.. I know what you mean about them not being able to tell us everything, things is he didn't even tell me the diagnosis.. Never mind eh?
As for the gum, will have to get the OH to get me some on her way home from work, stuck in bed today, knees are buggered and my back ain't great either, still paying for the trip away I'm afraid.. In the meantime though, I have plenty of the tics of a tac variety to munch upon, seems to help..

Sorry I have only just seen your post, the only thing I can recommend is the bonjela, at least it takes the pain out of the ulcers for a while.
Hope it improves very soon, and that you get your injections done.

Thanks Barbara, I am not sure what to expect on friday with the injections, not pinning my hopes on them working just in case. I don't know what position you have to have your knees in while they inject, hope it's not bent as that really hurts..

Ooooh! That reminds me of one of my favourite spoonerisms ever: I was chatting to a child at the time of the first Gulf War and he was enthusiastically describing military stuff to me (daddy was in the army) and he said 'We will win, we have better tictacs than the emeny!' Enjoy the munching. Are you minty fresh or orangey/lemony? DD

Regarding the knees: mine were done, with my legs as straight as I could get them - I usually had to have a rolled up blanket or a pillow underneath tho, as they don't straighten any more.
