Not been on for awhile.
Been back to hospital today re: my knee. I have OA. Consultant decided to give me injection into my knee. I left the hospital in a worse state than I arrived :( Couldn't even manage to walk out of the treatment room, they had to get a chair to take me back to patient transport. The poor nurse said she didn't want to mother me but could see how painful each step was. The driver who bought me home is also the one that took me and she asked what they had done to me for me to come out the way i did. Weight bearing is a nightmare once again and the pain is off the scale. Struggling to bend my knee as well. Is it meant to be like this after the injection? How long will it be like this? Any tips on reducing the current pain? Feel like I am back at square one right now.

On a plus note not back at hospital for 3 months, unless any problems in the meantime.

Hi Keara, please take it from me it should ease soon.. I actually had both mine done last friday, also have oa on the knees (as well as spine and RA in wrists).. It was extremely sore for a while, I could hardly stand up after having them done and shuffled back to my sis-inlaws car, it has got better each day, you must rest them though to let the steroid do it's thing. I rested the whole wknd, and yesterday and today have just done a little bit of walking, thankfully it seems that the injections are doing some good as my knees feel... FRESH? lol
You might wake up thinking (I did) that your knees are pain free at first, till you move them

Be a patient patient, I know exactly what you're going through..

I assume you mean a steroid injection. Rest it well, even go to bed for 48 hours, keep the weight off it, top up with pain dullers, give the steroid every chance to permeate the joint and thus, hopefully, work some magic on it. I wish you well. DD

    Hi Keara

I hope you feel alot better soon, I had both knees drained yesterday then both injected with steroids, I must say I was feeling like you last night, but after resting and taking today of work i must say I am like a new person to what I have been in the past two months, and people on here know what I was like at the weekend. Like others have said you need to give the steroids to get right into your knee, I promise you will feel the benifit soon. Di

It will ease as everyone has said & do rest but do gently bend it other wise you could have fluid retention which isn't pleasant

    Huge hugs

Thankyou everyone. I'm now in bed with pills :). The 2 injection sites look terrible. Hoping to get comfy and nod off. Hubby sorting tea - generally means take away.
Wish I'd known about injections before I went to the hospital as I could have sorted things out as had lots to do today and tomorrow - but it's always the way.

Hope that you can find someone to do those things for you or maybe postpone them? It really is best to rest the old pins :D

Hopefully you're in the land of nod right now and having a comfortable night..

Good morning Keira, just wondered how you were now? I hope that the pain has started to ease and you're more comfortable now.. Take things easy today, rest as much as you can, hopefully you'll get some benefit like I have.

Morning keira, I hope you managed to get some sleep last night and that things are settling down. It can take some time to do so, so rest the legs and don't bend them too much (well, that's what I was told!) I wish you well. DD

Got some sleep. Not as painful as yesterday although my knee gave way this morning. Have rested all day, played a sit down game on the wii for about 4hrs - oops! Lol
I was told to rest for 48hrs so hoping to be back on my feet tomorrow. Wish there were some other way of doing the injections as it was agony yesterday. Knee nicely bruised today as well, but I guess if it works it's worth it.

Hi all. Feeling better today. Drove round the corner to my friends today - knee felt really uncomfortable, but am assuming that it will get better. Walking is a bit off still, but that could be my MS rather than the OA!
My friend and I are off to town tomorrow. Most I have to to is drive there and back, she's gonna push me round in me wheelchair.

    Hi Marion,

I used to have my knees injected with steroids and I felt only benefit within hours - I've never reacted in the same way as Kiera, you have to remember we're all different.

I'd have them done again if I ever needed it and would look forward to it.

Am hoping that if I need to have injection again that I don't have same problem. As this has put me off even accepting it again. Have only been able to bend my knee in the last 20 mins and had the injection on Tuesday dinner!

We all know that reactions to the same stuff varies widely. I don't have OA, only PA, so for me a steroid injection involved a)local anaesthetic, b) draining the joint of fluid (which is possibly rare for OAers I suspect, I always think that is more of a 'dry' condition, tho please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) and c) the steroid injection. I have also had (a) and (b) followed by the injecton of radioactive material in a vain attempt to stop the effusion. Every single bl**dy time it hurt. And did b***er all.

I think I am right in saying that Keira also has MS - would that affect things too? I dunno, I am not a doc, but it does make one wonder. I think the success of these things is very dependant upon the skill of the one behind the needle. I have never had a single bruise - yes, there has been pain, and a very different pain to the usual, but never a bruise. Having said that tho, a map to one's smaller blood vessels could be useful for those wielding the needles. :D

Keira, I note you said you couldn't bend the knee for 48 hours or so - that fits with my experience, but I sincerely hope that the pain eases and that your knee feels a great deal better. Steroids do work, and I hope you are one of their number. DD

Hi Keara, the whole knee bending thing was the same for me, now they are a lot better... Just achey but that's probably the weather and I can deal with it, not like the pain I was getting before, yes the injections were sore, mine due to scar tissue according to GP, but would have them done again definately..

Hope you're still on the mend and really benefit from them

    Hi Linda

Thanks - perhaps it's something to do with technique too.. I have problems with my veins (only got one in my left arm that's any good and that keeps going into hiding) and on one occasion a doctor couldn't find it so took blood out of my hand - and made a right mess of it .. my hand was purple/bruised/sore for about a week!!

    Hi Keara,

flower you been unlucky i think.... glad its eased up a bit for you and one thing i do know from my knees is it depends on how good the person who does them is.... i have had mine drained and injected a few times and they don't normally do what yous have done.

i hoe so much you will get some benefit fro having them done. fingers crossed for a better tomorrow and sorry i am late t see this. Cris x

Yes I do have MS as well and I have been wondering if that's been the problem. Bit more movement in the knee today, but has given way twice today :(
I'm back ay physio on Monday and I have a home visit by my MS rehab team in a couple of weeks so maybe one of them can answer my questions.
Someone said about local anaesthetic then steroids. The specialist did mention it to me before I went to the treatment room, but I don't recall any local anaesthetic being given.

Hi Keira, I know that it could have been different for you but I definately didn't have a local with mine, just one injection of white cloudy stuff into the outer side of each knee..
Glad you're getting some more movement back, good luck with them, hope they help..

Hi keira :D nice to meet you.!

I hope the steroids do start to work for you and bring your relief from the pain. :!:

I've had me knees aspirated and injected with steroids twice recently and on both occasions was told I must rest the knees for 48hrs to allow the joints to recover and give the steroids the best chance of working.

It can take time to feel the full benefits of this procedure so maybe you'll find that your knees begin to ease up in the next few days/ week.

Sometimes the injections work better than at other times and I agree the doc's skill in administering it does make a difference !
