Knee update etc

Hi everyone
I must apologise for my absence and hope that things are going well with everyone. I'm trying to adjust to it being so cold!
As you know my first TKR was in February and I've been really pleased with it. The next one is due to be done next year and probably not until the summer. I saw the specialist last week. He was very pleased with my progress. I was relieved and disappointed at the same time it would have been nice to have it done around the same time but I can wait. This other knee is not as bad as the other one was. Having one good knee is a definite bonus!
I'm having a scan on 7 December and hopefully will know for definite if I have a frozen shoulder(s).
I've cut down on my tramadols and tend to rely on just plain paracetamol for pain relief and now take only one tramadol at night. I'm convinced the tramadols make me hot and this does not gel well with the menopause! I've also cut down on my amytriptilines - now I don't feel so much of a zombie first thing in the morning.
Anyway, I'm feeling really well this week and long may it continue. OA doesn't often give us any respite but when it does - it's wonderful!
Take care everyone.

Dear Cris, BB, Toni, Julie and Chris
Thanks for your replies. I relied on the tramadols to help me through my recovery. I've discussed my tramadol usage with my GP, however, they're not too concerned about how long I've been on it. Total knee replacements take a long time to recover from and you need the pain relief. It doesn't help having another dodgy knee. You're quite right I'll be needing the pain relief after the next op!
Have a great weekend. My veg man has told me that we may have snow next Tuesday - yuck! I feel sorry for those people who have it already. It's just too early.
I heard on the news that they're investigating the gas/electric companies regarding the latest price rises. It makes me so angry especially as they're rolling in dosh - millions of profit every year. These companies are just plain greedy.

Hi Sharmaine,
It’s so nice to hear from you. Good luck for the 7th as you have had to wait such a long time to get your shoulders sorted.
Totally agree with you about the fuel companies but sadly the energy watchdog has a poor track record.

Hi Sharamine
how great to see you posting... and even better to read your wonderful progress.
It'll also be good for you to get an opinion on your shoulders from the consultant.. and the 7th Dec isn't far away. please let us know how you get on?
You've come through this so well Sharmaine. gives a lot of hope and encouragement to those of us waiting to decide / still to have TKRs.
keep well and keep in touch. :!:

HI Sharmaine,
not a fan of this cold weather myself - wish I could hibernate!
Probably just as well your next op is a little further away - you need your frozen shoulder(s) to be better before you have to start relying on them more whilst recovering from your next TKR.
Good luck with MRI.
Tramadol - gave me hot flushes and made me itchy and sweaty ... I thought I was starting the change early - finally worked out that it was the tramadol.
Hope your OA behaves for a very long time - but remember don't over do it!
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Hi Speedy
Months ago I told the doctor (a locum) that I was positive the tramadol was making me sweat profusely and she said it couldn't possibly be. However, since stopping them (except for the occasional one at night) the heavy duty sweating has stopped. I'm hoping that there's an alternative medication other than tramadol once I have the next operation.
It will be good to know what the scan reveals on 7 December. Since I had the cortisone jab the pain has eased off considerably.
I hope my OA behaves too. I had to stop the diclofenac too as it was playing havoc with my stomach.
I hope you're ok.

Hi Iris
It is a big decision to go ahead with this operation. I prayed a lot before hand! I also had a lot of good advice from Elna.
How have you been?

Hi I
I'm not optimistic about the fuel companies showing compassion to those who really need it. It's been so cold this past week that the heating has been on a lot. I try and wrap up well but when you have arthur you can't bear the cold.
I hope you are doing well.

Hi Barbara
The one thing I did notice with initially losing my mobility because of OA in knees..then relying on a wheelchair for months prior to first TKR was how much weight I had gained! I'm certainly more mobile but it takes time to get the pounds off. After my next TKR I'm going to eat a low fat diet and prepare lots of meals for the freezer. I'm being good but will let my hair down for a few days over the Christmas period.
Take care
