Hi there

My GP has told me to start up knitting for my arthritis, and also said that I need to get some stress relief gloves for knitters. I have looked on the internet but can only find them in USA or the ones that are for crafter which are really for sewers.

Can anyone help me pleeeeaaaaasssseee.

I am an avid knitter but I've not heard of those gloves before. I shall have to look into them. Wooden needles are often recommended for people with arthritis, you can get many different kinds from cheap bamboo to more expensive hardwoods. I love KnitPro's. I use their interchangeable needles. They are circular needles and the points screw off so you can change them for different sizes. I use circular needles for straight knitting, when you get to the end of the row you just turn them around. It's much easier for me than using long straight needles as the cable carries the weight of the knitting so I can knit for much longer without needing a rest when I'm doing something big like a sweater.

Get yourself over to http://www.ravelry.com, it's kind of like Facebook for knitters. There are patterns, discussion forums and you can even show off the things you've knitted. I practically live there!

As someone with arthritis in the hands I find that advice ridiculous....knitting!?!!??????? and the position you need to be in would flare up joints I normally manage to cope with!!! ...Have I missed something or is this GP having a laugh!....may take your mind off it whilst doing it.... then you would sieze up into that bent over position if you have the probs I have! The activity of the devil!!!! :x

We're all different, cebeem. I don't know what form of arthritis our novice knitter has, or how advanced it is, or how much discomfort she faces. Just because you can't do something doesn't mean that others can't.

I wish you well, Kim, I hope it works for you. I used to love knitting but now lack the required concentration! DD

If you go back to a/c homepage

Then put knitting in the search box.....

you will see articles regarding knitting as a form of exercise for arthritis :D
