Hi,
The telly is asking all fit and healthy ones to "look out" for their elderly neighbours during the bad weather. As a 64 year old I'm wondering how soon someone will knock my door and ask how I'm getting on. Of course at 63 my dear wife IS an OAP . Arthritis apart how many of you over sixtys feel old?
Al

I am 51 and a considerable bit but feel about 90 today. Come hell or high water I am flaming well going out tomorrow - another day indoors will finish me off whereas a fall won't. I have replaced the ferrules on my crutches in preparation. It's snowed all day, it's now about 5" deep where it hasn't been disturbed but luckily I have all the essentials in - apart from Mr DD who is now, I hope, making his way slowly home from Norwich. My neighbour has cleared his front path - well, he got his son to do it, but they have left mine well alone. Shame, that. Healthy people - what do they know? :D I obviously don't need to be looked out for! DD

HI Grampyal, not nearly 60, but my body feels ancient today!

I think people tend to look after elderly neighbours if they are friends .. otherwise I don't think they do - they assume someone else will?

As for those with mobility problems - I suppose it is the same, unless they know you well, it wouldn't occur to them.

DD - there are ferrules designed for crutches on snow and ice (I found this out when looking to see if there was anything for crutches in wet weather ...) Too late for this spell of arctic weather but worth checking out in time for the next bout.

    Speedy
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

I'm 55 with the body of a elderly person but the mind of a 10 year old, a bit of a mismatch?

I consider a 75 year old as 'elderly' now, I'll probably get a clout round the side of me head from my 84 year old mum for calling her elderly now!
    8) Its a grin, honest!

Ooooh! speedy, thank you, I didn't know that! I hope you and S are keeping warm - does he like the snow? How much do you have - we have about 6" now, but at long last it's stopped snowing. DD

I am 47 also with a body and mobility of an old person but a mind of a 20 year old. The other day I did get a text off one friend who lives a couple of doors away and a phone call off my friend next door, both asking did i need anything. I thought that was nice. Others in the cul de sac haven't bothered but that might be because they know I have a husband.

I have asked my other neighbour if he wants OH to get him anything as he had a hip replacement the other year aged 63. And OH has cleared his path. OH looks after him by cutting his grass and putting out his bins all year round.

Hope you people who need help from others do get it soon.

Wonky, is there anyway you can get the number of your dads local shop off google and ring them, see if anyone goes his way and would drop a few bits off for him. i did this a few years ago when its bad and my ex mil was in the same situation, they delivered her a box of goodies with enough to keep her going for a few days. might be worth a try

i could go a month with out my neighbours seeing me before they would even start to think anything was wrong. everybody in and out like yoyo's only just enough time to smile if your lucky.

i used to live on a little street which was great everyone looked out for each other. we had a powercut one day it had gone on for hours. i was heating baby bottles all afternoon on my camping stove, then we all raided our freezers and came up with enough sausages/ burgers etc to feed all the kids tea (19 0f them) so we draged a couple of bbq's out and got cooking. end result was a happy day. thats comunity spirit, sadly not a lot of it about these days.

    Hi Al :D

I'm 59 and do not consider myself an elderly neighbour! However when I look around where I live I realise that I am very speedily moving towards becoming one of that 'generation'... and I did get a lovely surprise when two young neighbours (aged 10 & 9) knocked on my door and offered to clear the path of snow.

kindness comes from the most unexpected sources sometimes!

ps... great idea from coco about wonky's dad and shopping !

    Hi Al.
in our cul-de sac there is 11 bunglows.
    all the people are elderly.
we are 69 my mind feels 20 and wants to go and clear all the snow but my body as add enough and feels worn out
from the bit of house work i've done.
we use dial a ride you phone them the day before and book a time to be picked up and you go to shops and back door to door.
our friend of 50 years walked 2 miles to the chemist's that is a street away from us to get my sisters tablets and brought them too us she then had a drink and walked back
    thats a good friend.
    everyone take care joan xx

HI & sorry not to reply to this thread sooner, but didn't get on comp at all yesterday, and am late tonight too

Coco - thanks that was a super idea, and one I'll keep in the back of my mind should something similar happen again :D
However, thankfully dad is now well stocked. He did go out on Friday morning & made it to the nearest shop, but they were all out of most things as they had had no deliveries.

However, having been talking to his niece on the phone the other day, he'd jokingly said something about wishing a fairy would land with a pint of milk, and bless her she got her hubby to come over to dad's side of the city (they live about as far across the city as is possible from dad!) and do some shopping for him :D:D:D I was so relieved, and so glad that they have a 4x4 and we'll know to ask in future if he's really stuck!!!

Oh, and the neighbours went to the supermarket but never asked if he needed anything!

Our neighbour who is one and a half times my age cleared all the snow from our door, all the way down the path and around the car today   I was so grateful, but it did remind me how rubbish I am :x

Nobody at our old place would have ever even thought that we may need help, so glad we moved to here... Great neighbours.

Tony (not putting my usual smiley face as I'm feeling sorry for myself!) :(
