Hi guys

over the past few months my knees seem to playing tag with me and take it in turns to play up on me and quite often i cant walk to far due to the pain and i feel unstable at times like they want to give up

would a stick help me get around a bit better and if so how do i go about getting one ?

my medication is

Piroxicam
Sulfasalazine
Hydroxychloroquine Sulphate
Co-Codamol

I used to take meth via injection but the sickness i had was to much for me and i was 3 points under the NICE guideline for anti-TNF so am now partaking in a trial for Subcutaneous Golimumab http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00975130?term=go-more&rank=1 which hopefully will help i had my first injection last month and so far i havent seen any result but its early days

Hi Maori :D nice to meet you!

I have problem knees too and at the moment use one stick outdoors which does help relieve the pressure on the worst knee.

I was given mine by a hospital Physiotherapist. Some people can self refer to physio others have to be referred via their GP, so it might be worth you making an enquiry?.

I'm really interested to see you are 'enrolled' in the golimumab clinical trials. I do hope it works for you. :!:

Thanks for posting the link too... very helpful to see what's happening with this drug.

There's some talk of the trial being extended to Scotland (where I live) and I am hoping it will include folks with Psoriatic Arthritis. My understanding was that golimumab had been designed specifically for PA but I see that at the mo the trial info. criteria focusses on folks with RA.

that aside...if it helps any of us with arther, no matter what the type, then that has to be a good thing!

good luck! and please let us know how you get on..

    Hi Maori
I find that when my knee is really unstable or painful, one crutch is easier then a stick, trouble is if you are going out they dont fold away.

Any form of support would help. You can buy sticks (ones that fold up can be quite useful, you can stow them in a back-pack and have them there should the need arise), but it's the height of them that is important. I think one's hand should be level with one's hip, and you should use the stick on the OPPOSITE side to the painful joint: if both are hurting use two. I cannot walk with sticks, they do not offer enough support for me so I use crutches - I am, however, a great deal further down Deterioration Road than you. DD
Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben

    Hi Maori,

Sticks helped me with my walking pain.I had the ones with a palm shaped handle on top. However I did feel old and vulnerable so when I had my THR I got given crutches so left my sticks behind on purpose. I dont feel so disabled on crutches as peeps think you have had an accident or something. They seem more sympathetic.

My rheummy got me my appointment with OT.

    Hi Maori

As a fellow OA sufferer of the knees I completely understand how you're feeling. I had my first TKR in February this year and used a walking stick, then elbow crutches then a wheelchair to get around. One of the knees was completely bowed which made walking almost impossible. Thankfully my TKR sorted this out. Some people seem to manage without them but I relied on my stick to get me out of bed, out of seated postions into the car etc. I also bought a rotating seat pad for the car as getting in and out was putting a strain on my back and shoulders.

I don't know about you but I found it almost impossible to get out of a seated position especially if it is low! We bought 4 inch sofa legs and raised all the lounge furniture and that has made my life easier.

Contact your Occupational Therapist as they are good at sorting out other problems around the home.

    With regards
