Hiya,
Me again with another question x:D
My left foot is really sore, especially the bone at the side of my big toe. This happened a while back but the pain went away. Now it's back again and it's really painful. I will go to my drs but was wondering if anyone has bunions? Are they linked to arthritis?
Ta much,
Magenta x

Hi Magenta, I had bunions (hallux valgus - my ortho called it) as a teenager and had them operated on, great results. This was before I had arthritis. Don't know if any known links, however arthritis in one joint will put strain on other compensating joints.

Hope pain goes away this time too, but if it doesn't then ask for a referral.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

Morning , Magenta , I have very misshapen feet similar to bunions which I am told is malformed bone structure due to my RA ! Whatever it is , it hurts like all sorts ! Hope you get your footsies sorted soon . I was told not to aggravate mine by putting weight and pressure ( ie by walking ) on them ! Easier said than done ! Jilly .

    Hi Magenta,

Bunions can definitely be aggravated by oa and ra but their inception isn't necessarily caused by wearing badly fitting shoes in the first instance. My surgeon says it's mainly genetic and I'm having my right one sorted on Wednesday. :))

Do get a referal to put your mind at ease

Hi, I too have bunions and they started hurting when I was in my late teens. My GP said that he thought in was the shoes I wore, I used to wear high heels a lot! Over the years I have learnt that its the fitting of the shoes over the bunion that is the main cause of the problem, if I get shoes with a thight fit or decoration over the front, like a firnge or buckle, or a seam in the leather, it will cause pain, no matter how flat or high ( not that I can wear heels now x:( . Never buy anything that hurts even a little in the shop, as after a few hours agony sets in! Thats my experience, yours may be different. Maybe your gP can help.
Love Sue PS Sherry's right, it can be genetic, my Mum had them and my sister has them! Bad feet run in our family.....

    Hi magenta
I have a bunion well i presume it is, at the side of my big toe too which is always red in colour.
I have a very mishapen, shrunken foot now caused by RA. Used to be a slim size 6 now a fat eeeee size 4  . The only shoes I can wear after trying many are c**y f**t. x:(
Hope your bunion calms down soon and that your gp can help.
    What about cushioned plasters?

    Hi Magenta

    Sorry about your poorly foot!

I too have what I presume is a bunion on one foot and the big toe is turned inwards so that the next toe along sits on top of it (if you see what I mean). My feet have been affected by RA so I don't know if that's the cause or whether it is hereditary (My Mum had bad bunions). I've never got mine investigated cos my feet are pretty shot anyway x:roll: It can be very painful though I agree and I find that rubbing the base of my big toe with anti-inflammatory gel does help.

Good luck with getting it looked at though Magenta.

    Hi Tilly,
Thanks for your reply. Have been out again today, driving and on my feet for a long time. Now the whole big toe is hurting. The pain goes right into my big toe but along the side :? Anyway, I'll get it checked out,
    Thanks again,

    Hi Magenta

It does sound as if checking it out would be a good idea - at least you would know then what it is.

    Hello!

When I went to see The Man, he looked at my feet - I have had bunions on both feet since I was a child... he said that this was something he wasn't surprised to see and this was the same day that he positively diagnosed me with RA. I've grown up with mine, have never worn super-fashionable shoes, always opted for comfort over coolness! I must say though that Primarni have recently started doing wider-fitting shoes, so I am a proud owner of a couple of cheap pairs of ankle boots which are very comfortable (after I added in a cushioned insole). I have been given the option of surgery, but as I am used to the discomfort (which I don't really notice as I wear comfortable footwear) and my left big toe is actually numb now, however, I personally have decided against it as I don't think I could stand being out of action for several weeks... but each to their own. I hope that the pain subsides for you soon. xx
