Hi all
I need to have both my hips replaced, but also have arthur of the spine, a couple of weeks ago i went to my consultant who said I also have bursitis of both hips,
Anyway to cut a long story short he said do I want injection for the bursitis or go for the THR, I have been on the list once but I back out.
The thing is he said he cant promise that the pain will be much less because of my back, it could be 70pc my back and 30 my hips, or the other way round.
My hip x rays show a massive change in the last 2 yrs, they are both bone on bone now.
Sorry if I am not making sense , I have had to up all my meds.
Thanks for listening, I just needed to talk about it, and see what you think.
Love

Hi Barbara.
That is a hard question to answer.
i think if your hips have got that bad in 2 years what will they be like in a nother 2 years.
will you benifit even in a small way if yes then i would go a head with the thr.
i hope that helps a bit Barbara.
when do you have to let him know.
i wish you all the with your thinking you can pm me any
time. joan xxtake care

HI Barbara
what a tough choice you have to make.
If it were me I'd be trying to get as much information together as I could in order to make that decision - only you can make the final decision though.
I can't help really with the OA stuff as I have no knowlegde personally of hips that way, but have you thought about ringing the Arthritis Care helplines people? They would be good to help you work out what questions you could ask, and what you needed to consider in order to weigh things up.
loads of hugs ((((()))))) & thinking of you

I don't have OA, and so far my hips are OK but . . . . . I would go for the op - wouldn't that also 'cure' the bursitis or am I grabbing the wrong end of the stick? Oh barbara12, this is not an easy one: only you can judge your pain levels and how much more you can tolerate but if an op would help, and prevent further deterioration, then to my mind it's a relatively simple decision. You know we will back you whichever way you go - fancy a spell in our opium den whilst you mull it over? DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Oh dear, Barbara, I really can't help either not being one of the OA-ers. Can send (((((((((()))))))))) for you and hope the other 'hippies' can help.

Thank you Lynn, Joan, Wonky, DD, and Annie
Sorry if it was all confusing, the meds have worn off a little , so I am a bit more clear headed.. :?
Lynn, what I meant to say, he has offered me the jabs first, and then I can go for the op...the trouble is if I have the jab first then it will be months before I have the first THR
Joan , you are right , I shouldn't wait any longer
Wonky thanks for the hugs
DD i will join you in the den.....but I wouldn't want to come out x:)
Annie thanks for the hugs...I will get there
Thanks everyone...it really does help ...having you all to talk to.
Lots of hugs back ((((((((()))))))

Hi barbara
poor old you x:(
hve the jabs for sure - they are so worth a try.
That might help to see which bit of pain is the hips (not the bursa) and which the back? Might not though even then x:(
You can always go on the list for the hip op again too ( you can always back out as you know!), and try physio for your back like Hileena is doing at the moment?
Take care

Hello, I am sorry to hear about your problem. I think you it may help if you had a bit more information, either talking to a rheummy nurse, phoning the Helpline on here, or a chat with your GP. The more knowledge you have the more you will be able to make an informed decision. At the moment, you are suffering from shock, so, if possible, give yourself a bit of time.
I have OA in my spine and hips, but nothing like as badly as you, by the sound of it, but I do find it hard to tell exactly where the pain is coming from. Before I had xrays, I never thought it was my back at all! Lots of love and take care of yourself. xxx((((())))) Sue0 -
hello Barbara so sorry for you dilema i dont know of any advise but you are welcome to lots of hugs xx{{{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}}}}I know i am a lady ,all life is a journey xx MAY xx0

Lots of hugs Barbara ((((((((((x ))))))))
I've got OA & RA and so far have had a L THR and a R TKR and in my own experience I'd rather have 50 hip replacements than a knee replacement. That's just me though, everyone is different. and I've got to have the other knee done
The hip replacement I had in August has got rid of the trochanteric bursitis on that side but I still have it in the as yet unoperated hip. The injections did zilch for me, it might just have been water x:(
I might be misinterpreting what you say but is the crux of the issue the fact that the problem might be to a large extent in your spine?
Whatever you decide I'll be wishing you well but for me personally I can thoroughly recommend a new hip and I'm quite looking forward to having the other one done x:D
Cherry, who's now off to the den 'cos I'm having my bunion done tomorrow and haven't been allowed to do my last two Cimzia 'jections 'cos of that and me teef I had to have out last Friday.0 -
Hello Barbara
I can't offer any advice I'm afraid, but I CAN send some hugs (((()))) and say that I am thinking of you.

OOOh Barbara - 'bone on bone' in both hips and back problems and bursitis too!.. you must be in such pain ... (I was only bone on bone in one hip and that felt bad enough..)
Hmm, tricky question.. I think I would go for the THR ..
Would they be planning to do both hips at the same time or leave a gap of six months or so in between??
Marion x0 -
Oh Barbara, you poor love
Sorry only just got on line today to see this. You know how much we tend to agree on the fear factor but lovey when I hear this I think you really know which way it has to be.
I didn't realise the jabs would necessarily delay any THR nor that they are not certain to help with the pain. Not sure who I saw at the hossie on my recent dismal visit but although he annoyed and upset me intensly by not listening to a word I said, perhaps when he said I WILL know when it is time for surgery he was speaking some truth. :? This is not what you want to hear I know, but you know you have my sincere sympathy. I really do feel for you. Keep talking on here if it helps get your thoughts straight and we will be with you whatever you decide.
I send hugs, and courage always ((((( )))))

Hi Barbara
I cant give you any advice because 'm in a bit of a quandry as well.
All I can do is tell you my experience....
One THR and the 2nd one cancelled because he wanted an MRI on my back....then decided my back needed sorting first.
Had one appointment with a back specialist who then discharged me to a physio.
I've had 2 appts whit her up to now so dont really know if its doing much good or not.
Just thought i would mention one thing the physio said......"It looks like referred pain from your back and no amount of THRs will take away the pain in that case so we better try to get your back sorted"
I'm not advising you one way or the other but just letting you know what she said. You might be conpletely different
Love and (((( )))))) Hileena0 -
Hi Barbara,
Sorry i am late seeing this flower.
Advise I can't really give but I can tel you this. 4-5 years ago my rumo asked me if I wanted to go on the hip list cus of loss of movement ad pain but I worked out my own are probably better for this way of life if I could ignore them.
Since then they have kinda fused the selves a bit and now they don;t hurt so much though they don;t have a lot of movement in them.
Now this is the bit you might want to think about..... I have a duff spine and neck and they tell me now that the hip op would be a problem cus f the back in its refusal to be laid on for more than a few mins and the neck and wrists as the crutches wouldn't support me.
If i had had them done back along the back and neck may not have been such an issue.
I am very lucky us they don't hurt even close to the neck and lumber and its interesting to read one o the pain in the hips could have come fro the back.
Tis some hard to decide flower and I hope you can me to a conclusion soon. Love and a ((((( ))))) Cris xx0 -
Hi barbara
Just seen this , sorry I am a bit late.
A tough decision I know. I hate ops myself.

A big Thank you to Toni, Sue, Berty,Cherrybim, Tilly, Marion, Chris, Hileena, Cris, and Julie.
You are a lovely lot, and I appreciate that you are all going through your own pain.
Its has really helped to read all your post and piece everything together, my plan is to see if my gp will refer me to a back specialist...he hasnt done this yet.
I will have to think about the injections...I know they didnt work on my spine, and I will get on the list again for my THR
Cherrybim...good luck with the op today...i hope it all goes well
Cris...you are right I would love to hold on to my own hips x:)
Thanks so much everyone for listening... x:) x:) x:)
Love to you all

Hi Barbara,
Sorry I have no advice to offer but I agree with some off the others on here that if you can talk to your GP so you can get a better picture of all your options. You have to be in so much pain Barbara, if you go for the injections would that fit in to the time of the year when you would want to have the THR?
Sorry that you are in this situation, such a lot to consider.
Lv, Ix0 -
Hi ironic
You are thinking on the same lines has me, I know that if I have the injections it will delay my op, because he is waiting to see what the results will be.
Thank you for that, think I am getting there now.

Hi Barbara,
Ah but had it not been my way of life I would have had them done back along and then my back was a s bad but the neck and shoulders weren't so the walking aide part would have been easier than it is now and I also know you have to go through a lot of pain before they fuse and they might not fuse in a way that's kind to you....
Just saying flower....
I am glad your talking of gong on the list cus I wish I had and also less pain has got to help eh?!
You know we will be with you what ever you decide and I must go get ha and a b'day cake. Love and a ((((( ))))) cris xx0 -
Hi Barbara
Thanks for calling in and I'm glad the fog is clearing a little for you, though still lots to consider there I know and all scary!!. Good idea to ask to see the back specialist first and get his advice. It can't happen all at once so make that the first step eh and let us know how it goes? In the meantime I really hope they can help with the pain for you.
love and hugs (((( ))))
Chris xx0 -
I think that is a really good idea, Barbara, to see the back specialist first.
I also think if you are planning to go ahead with the hip op that getting on the list now is a good idea too, don't know what it is like round your way, but here the list for that type of replacement surgery is months long and likely to get longer.
Leaving you some more ((((((())))))) to keep you going for the next lot of bad weather.
Love
