Hiya all....I really hope you don't mind me popping in for a moan!
As the title suggests i am quite poorly at the mo. I have a number of medical conditions (endometriosis, Ulcerative colitis, RA, Renal reflux and CFS). They seem to all cropp up at the same time and cause me no end of problems. I have been in and out of hospital this year (4 tummy ops in the past 18months, 5 hospital admissions and numerous out-patient appointments). During the most recent admission (6 weeks ago) i spent 8 days being passed from pillar to post before being discharged and finally diagnoised in the out-patient department with a severe flare up of Ulcerative colitis caused by NSAID's. I was then put onto Predisalone for treatment of both the RA and the UC. All was going fairly well, the UC went into remission and my joint swelling halted. Thursday morning i woke up feeling extremely poorly, severe tummy cramps, nausea and generally feeling un-well. My joints were extremely painful and swollen too (The form of ulcerative colitis i have can cause arthritis) so i called my GP, she explained that she doubts the tummy cramps were being caused by a tummy bug as vomitting generally comes first, she asked about when i took my Preds and i told her first thing in the morning, a stunned silence followed and then she informed me that she feels the preds has caused bowel ulcers as they aren't meant to be taken on an empty stomach!! As if that wasn't enough, i went to the GP yesterday and was told that i have a bad kidney infection, basically everything that could have shown in the sample has done. I have been put on 2 heavy duty anti-biotics and told if this doesn't work i will need to be admitted for IV anti-biotics. I have also needed to put my dose of Preds back up because of the infection. The kidney infection is because of the renal reflux (this is a faulty valve between the urether and the bladder, it's meant to close by mine stays open meaning urine is backflowing into the kidney, so infected urine is going into my kidney).
I know this isn't actually Arthritis related but just wanted to vent.
Hope no-one minds

We dont mind you venting one bit, I think that it is easier to talk to the people on the forum rather than family.

Hi Deedum, Like Barbara i'm not going to be much help apart from listening. I too have sufferd multi illness for a long time and it really does wear you out. I found that my brain worked overtime and i thought all sorts of bad things where wrong. With the family allthough i love them them all they really never understood i felt like a moaner. Prednisolone is one of those drugs you dont want but you need it if you know what i meen.
I take loads of meds but always have my breakfast prior to the meds but i know Pred has caused me some tummy problems and inflamation of the tummy. I do hope your feeling better after your rant and some times just writing on the site or trying to help another member can make you feel better. Plenty of people here with a listening ear so keep posting and keep talking it helps.

Hi Deedum
Gosh, you have been through the mill over the last 18 months..
My Mum used to suffer from ulcerative colitis and I remember how much pain she was in when it flared up..
Hope the antibiotics work for you and thank goodness you have now been diagnosed so the doctors know how to treat you..
Hope you have a better 2011.

Hello all,
Sorry i haven't been about much, I've been in hospital with the nasty kidney infection, Boy it was a complete nightmare!
When i was admitted i told the doc what painkillers i took at home and asked if they could prescribe them for me. The doc agreed until he found out how much i took and how strong they were so decided to give me a long lecture on the risk of long term pain relief...Blah, Blah, Blah, it seriously was heard it all before!
When i was on the ward a doc came round and i asked him to prescribe it, he then went on to explain that he had spoken to another doc that had 'had dealings with me' and that Dr 2 had said i didn't require that level of pain relief for the condition that he has knowledge of. Ok, thats a bit cryptic so i will explain a little, i have a gynae conditon that is quite complicated and requires surgery to provide relief but as yet there is no cure for it apart from pain management, Dr 2 is a gynae doc who specialises in female cancers so any advice he gives is purely speculation, i was admitted under him 8 weeks back after a flare of Ulcerative coltitis and he had spent the whole time saying it was in my head until i was seen by gastro who comfirmed i was in a flare. To say me and Dr Gynae don't see eye on eye is an understatement, especially after him sticking his nose in when i was admitted this time as a urology patient and not a gynae patient, i could understand urology asking for his opinon if he was my gynae consultant but he knows nothing about my condition. Anyways the urology docs decided to follow dr Gynaes advice and not prescribe my painkillers. I was so angry so asked for the urology doc to come back and adviced him to speak to Gastro and Rheumy as well if they wanted an accurate picture of how much pain i might be in, They then decided to refer me to a pain specialist that was bemused that they had been called as i only saw them 6 weeks ago and they decided on my current painkillers!
Sorry to complain, just needed to get it off my chest!
Thanks again

Surely they should take the word of the pain management folks, that is they're speciality at the end of the day..
Some Docs think they know every bloody thing..
Hope that you're as on the mend as you possibly can be...

Male gynaecologists. Is it only me that thinks that that is a massive contradiction? A female gynae has a fighting chance of truly understanding what goes on, but someone from Planet Bloke? I hope you are on the mend now, Deedumdedoo. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Morning hope you are feeling a bit better...
You certainly have been through the wars... i really hope you find some comfort soon..
I have endometriosis so am all to familiar with gynaecologists.. The problem i have is that i see a different cocnsultant near u enough every appointment which i find unfair on the patient to have to go through symptoms again and explain how your feeling... i if you were able to build a relationship with your gynae you would prob have more confidence..
I actually had a great male gynae yrs ago who was really understanding and supportive he could see i was at my wits end and admitted me in with morphine.. a female doc cam round to see me and basically said i was making it up an that i couldn't be in as much pain as i was saying and that it was prob in my head... felt like saying swap places an then tell me it's in my head lol.
I hope things run a bit more smoothly for u now..
Take care

Thanks for the replies guys
Dream daisy- You'd think that female gynae doc's would be more understanding but i have found the opposite to be true. Female gynaes have periods so the majority of them think that because they can deal with them with little or no problems that every should be able to. Male gynaes have no idea what periods are like so have to guess. I suppose it is like us trying to imagine how painful a kick in the family jewels would be to men.
Tracey- It's endo that i suffer from too. The problem i have is that i travel an hour away to see a 'specialist' regarding my endo problems but my Gastro and rheumy are at the local hospital so i often have the problem of trying to decide which hospital to present at. The local hospital is litterly a stone throw away (i can see it from my bedroom window) so generally i will go there in an emergency and get transfered to the other hospital if needs be. Here lays the problem, the local hospital don't have my 'endo' notes so i often have to try and convince them of my staging and sites. It also causes problems with pain relief as as far as they are concerned i am a young girl, with no history of endo (not in there notes anyways) demanding morphine for pain relief.
I am planning on approaching MIND the mental health charity to see if they could look into the way that people with mental health problems are treated when presenting with chronic medical conditions. You wouldn't believe the amount of time my previous depression comes up when i see a doc about pyshical problems.
Oppps starting to ramble!

HI Deedum you are really having a hard time at the moment. Hope things start to improve for you soon. In the meantime we are all out here in cyber space offering you support.
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Morning Deedum.
How are you feeling today??
I certainly can sympathise with you in regards to endo, i have suffered for 12 yrs... I also have the problem that my notes are at a different hospital, so they expect me to remember where it is what i have had done etc etc... surely n this day and age all records should be on the computer so that it can be read easily on the screen!!!! and female gynaes are not the most sympathetic as u said...
It took me a hospital admission to be put on the morphine patches, which i found a great releif at the time ... not long afetr i had subtotal hysterectomy... still suffer now but am a whole lot better than i was.. am here when ever you want to ramble on about endo.. i understand your pain and frustration..
Along with your endo you have all your other problems... must be awful for you at the moment... I have had a few doctors that because i am explaining how badly my life is being affected by my medical problem that they automatically think i'm depressed... we are allowed to get upset and cry when we feel upset... this does not necessarily make us depressed... i know alot of ppl are and i feel for them as it can be a very dark place sometimes... just remember though you are never on your own no matter how bad or lonely you may feel... there will always be someone to listen to you.. y6ou'll be surprised..
I really hope you get some comfort soon.. you deserve that surely...
Try and keep positive.. it's a loing winding rd... but the light is there at the end somewhere... you will get there... it just may take time..
Thinking of you..
