Thinking young/ staying young

Hi
According to new research undertaken by scientists at Harvard University, it may be that the key to looking younger than you are and staying healthy longer is as simple as thinking and acting young. Psychologist Dr Ellen Langer is convinced we have far more control over our well-being than we know. She believes just thinking young can have a powerful effect on both health and appearance –all we need is the determination not to ‘buy in’ to old age.
Mind over matter, it seems, can improve everything from blood pressure to arthritis and eyesight.

I think that there is a lot of truth in this, and I have every intention of growing old disgracefully. What do you think :?:

Age is a state of mind. OK, our bodies let us down, but our minds shouldn't be allowed to - that is something we can control. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

I am the original Peter Pan, never gonna grow up, haven't worn a pair of socks that don't have some kind of cartoon character on them for about ten years, same with t-shirts..
I am sure being a big bloody kid helps me stay positive..
Whoa... Just heard that Pete Postlethwaite has died, sorry I know it's not that kind of thread but it's just been on the news.. He was a great actor.. Only in his sixties... :shock:Me-Tony

Thank you for all your replies. From what I can gather, all the people who have posted on this thread have the right attitude to life, and are very young at heart, whatever their age. I think that is the key, to try to remain in touch with your inner child, and to focus on what you CAN do, rather than on what you can't.
I am guided by my best friend, who at the age of 87 is one of the ''youngest'' people I know. Life has not always been kind to her, and recently she has been battling with cancer, but throughout everything she remains positive and has a wonderful ( and wicked! ) sense of humour.
I like this quote:
Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
I hope that I never grow up :!: I intend to be like the woman in the poem:
WARNING!
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other peoples' gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickles for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

I am developing a fondness for purple - that is a cracking poem, joanlawson, one of my favourites. I can understand why our agéd mums spend so much time looking back, but I don't think it does them that much good. I don't bother looking back: life was much, much better and I know it won't ever match that again, so what's the point? Those days are gone, well and truly, so I will try to make the best of what is to come. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

I'm glad to hear that we're a positive bunch... It would be so easy for us all to mope about feeling sorry for ourselves, doing that once every now and then is understandable but not all the time... Life is what it is... We have what we have and cannot change it unfortunately so let's get on with it with a stupid childish grin..

More than 10 million people in the UK, who are currently alive, are expected to live to more than 100, according to government figures.
That just goes to show that we might be around longer than we imagine, so all the more reason to stay young at heart and make the most of life.
Here's a few tips on how to stay young:
HOW TO STAY YOUNG
1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay "them!"
2 Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.
3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.
4. Enjoy the simple things.
5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.
7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
9 Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.
10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.
AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
