Hi, I had my 4th physio appt this morning and that looks like the end of them. Up to now she has given me 3 exercises to do....today she said that we seemed to be at a standstill.....she booked me in for 3 lots of acupuncture with someone else starting from next week.
She more or less said ......we cant do any more for you.
The upsetting thing is not the pain but the lack of mobility....I was much better before the THR but now can only walk for 10 mins or so outside......I thought I would get back to pre op mobility.....not great but not bad.....had to stop for a few coffees LOL when we were out but that was it. So I'm not a happy little bunny
Love Hileena

    Hi Hileena,

    That is disheartening.

Is the lack of mobility due to your op hip or your back? What was the physio focussing on? DId the physio say why your progress was at a standstill?

Keep doing the exdercises - the physios always tell me it takes at least 6 weeks of exercises to see any improvement - so don't give up hope.

    Hope the acupuncture helps?

    Speedy
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi Speedy,
She thinks its from my back but wasnt sure......not even sure which side it was coming from....she was very young.
It just seems funny that its since the THR that the mobility got worse.
As for the exercises....1) on my back, knees bent, roll knees to eith side.
2)knee on chair and pull in tummy muscles while leaning on another chair
3)curl both knees up under my chin {holding them} when I pointed out about the THR she said OH well the operated one....dont bring it up as much???? I cant see how those will make a lot of difference to me.
I know the lad thats trained to do the acupuncture.....I saw him about 8 yrs ago when first diagnosed and I think he is in charge of the dept now.....might get more sense from him

Oh dear hileena, you don't sound like your usual self. I am v tired, and off to bed, but I will come back tomorrow with a proper answer. THRs do take a while to get over, but yours was done some time ago, yes? They are big operations, I do know that. I hope you get some sleep tonight. DD

    Hi Hileena,

I am so disappointed for you. I know that some people enjoy great success from acupuncture so I do hope you are one of them.

You must feel so let down after all the messing about you have been through.

Sorry I cannot be more help to you.

    Hi Hileena,

Not good when they say that I know but the acupuncture may help no end and you may not need their help... I think sometimes we find out own way better than they find for us if that makes sense?

Did they say how many times you would have to have the acupuncture? I got 6 real ones (I think) and as many top ups as helps so you might find they can do long the same lines for you with a bit of luck.

Do you see the back guy again soon? He might have some ideas as to what might help you?

Backs and physios I have never found them much help excluding hydro when they operated. I have found it helps to build up the back muscles, indirectly that helps the hip ones as well. I don't know if that could be a way for you to try and get some better movement in it all?

Fingers crossed the acupuncture does help you so much more. Cris x

Morning hileena, how are things today? I cannot come up with any great words of wisdom (nothing new there), but I do feel for you. As another with restricted mobility it does get one down from time to time - and I haven't had the 'bonus' of any replacements either, so it must be worse for you. Sometimes these things are not all they are cracked up to be, yes? I am so sorry. DD

    Hi Hileena

Perhaps the pain you are experiencing when walking, is coming from your back as I remember that you do have back problems. I have heard that sometimes after a hip op, the leg is a little longer. Perhaps this may have happened with you and your back may not like that one bit. Just a thought. You must feel disheartened, I know I would.

    Hugs

    Hi Hileena
I am so sorry to hear this, I know how you feel about the physio, they gave up on me has well, it dosnt seem to take much these days.
I have been told that it is far better going private for physio, trouble is I cant afford it, but it is something to think about, maybe just having the initial examination.
    Good luck with everything

Hi DD, Yes I was a bit down.......fed up traipsing to the hospital to no avail..... How are you.....you didnt sound great either. Its almost a year since THR...it was then 8th Feb last year.

Hi I, Well I'm hoping the acupuncture works as well.....quite prepared to give it a go although I know nothing about it except its needles {thats doesnt bother me} so heres hoping it works.

    Hi Chris,
I know nothing about acupuncture like I said to I, As for how often.....Ive got 3 appointments booked,......starting next week, for 3 weeks...Whats the difference in a "real" one and top ups??? The back specialist....he saw me once and discharged me to the physio,......not seeing him again at all?????? The hydro helped to build up muscles? We have pools here but no hydrotherapy pools. The hospital I go to used to have one then they knowcked the hospitalo down built a new one but didnt include a hydrotherapy pool....weird!! I've phoned other hospitals and they have said I'm out of nthe catchement area its for their patients so thats that. Thanks for your info.

    Thanks for your words Julie
DD.....THR in my case certainly wasnt all it was cracked up to be....a bit more mobile before it.
Toni....No Hydrotherapy....read my last post to Chris.
Hi Elna, seems ages since I talked to you. Yes OA in lower spine and hips was the original diagnosis.....The hip surgeon measured my legs at one of my appointments and there was just a fraction of an inch...not noticable. Its the scoliosis that makes one appear shorter than the other
Hi Barbara....didnt know the physio had given up on you.....was this after the THR or something else? I doubt that I could afford it either but as you say possibley an initial appointment is an idea
If I've missed anyone I'm sorry.....I'll check back on the posts LOL Got a memory like a goldfish now Love Hileena

    Hi Hileena,

I have had problems with my back too since my op... I have lots of back exercises to do including the first one you describe. My current physio is all for my back and not for my hips - the physio says my spine is curved at the top, she did some spine manipulation and gave me lots of exercises ... which I haven't done seriously yet - due to being shattered, S being ill and Christmas. Must start on them asap.

I think when both hips are bad the back has to compensate for them and this takes it toll. On top of that we then have months of restricted movement - as we deteriorate waiting for the op and then following hip restrictions ....

Your physio does seem very inexperienced - especially if she can't identify what is causing what. The acupuncture guy sounds like he knows his stuff - I think you should tell him some more and see if he can identify what it going on as well as doing his thing with the needles.

    Keep us updated.

    Speedy

Hi Speedy, Lets hope Kristen knows what he's doing....he should do...in charge of physio dept as far as I know. I've had no back exercises at all.....although I've been diagnosed with kypho scoliosis......kypho being a bend at the top of your back and scoliosis being a C shaped curve in your back.....I'll let you know what happens.
    Love
