Help any advise gratefully received.
We have closed our caravan down for the winter and put loads of containers of salt/washing powder down to absorb water. We have also left our centre heating on freeze setting. This was done after talking at length with one of the maintenance whos area was central heating. He explained the reason have problems with their centre heating at the start of the season because the pumps seize up.
We have had a call from the caravan site saying that they are advising people to come down this weekend to change salt etc as some people have checked their caravans and the salt had iced over and gone solid!!!!
We are at Haven and they are buggers for trying to get you to upgrade and change or rent your caravan out etc.
Last year our old caravan with no central heating was fine and we had not problems but did like this year leave loads of containers of salt/washing powder down. (large bowl in each room with smaller containers in ever wardrobe etc.
Do we need to go down and check???? It is a 3hour drive down then a 3 hour drive back???
Look forward to hearing from you about this.

    Hi lupin
We have a tourer (I know its not the same but the principal maybe) we keep ours in a compound a couple of miles away. We also always put in those crystal tubs to absorb any moisture. And my husband also checks a couple of times through the winter months to check there are no changes inside, ie damp, or cracks. This is just piece of mind.
I understand you not wanting to travel so far but as the winter has been so cold it may be wise to do so just for your own piece of mind.
I reckon you have done everything possible to try to prevent any damage from the cold.
Sorry I can't be of more help, hopefully someone else will have more info for you.
And I hope your caravan is fine.

Hi Lupes, we had a static for twelve years, it was a two hour drive away but to be honest I would be willing to go over to check after the weather we have had..
We used to put salt down in tubs and also the crystals that you can buy these days.. One thing I always used to do (was a bit fitter back then) was disconnect and drain any water pipes under the van.. This really does help, make sure that gravity can empty the pipes by opening the taps etc... Once water is off obviously. lol
Also put anti freeze in the toilet bowl...

We did also try to make sure that our seating cushions/matresses etc were only making minimal contact with anything by standing them up or propping them up somehow.. Make sure if you do this that they are not where the sunlight can get to them as this will bleach them..

    Hope that helps..

    Hi
Yep done all of that and covered all the cushions in a tarpaulin (and all the beds). Will have to try and arrange to pop down and maybe book a bed and breakfast so hubby does not have to drive 6 hours in one day.
Haven are buggers for trying to sell you stuff and when i heard the words just let me know if you are coming down this weekend, i just though here we go sales !!!!"would you like to upgrade...."
    Thanks

It's known in this household as 'a brolly problem' ie if you take your brolly with you it won't rain and if you don't, it will. Only you can decide. DD

    Hi Lupin,

They try to get the upgrade so they can charge more down here.....

I think you have done about all you can and well I live in an old static, very big but very old  Condensation is a huge problem and there is nothing you can do about it...... You choose between heat or it basically.....

The salt and washing powder is a good idea and have been known to use that in spare room.......

How often you check it really is down to how sheltered the site is? See this one isn't on a site..... its in a field, its lovely in summer on a nice day but gets bashed like hell all winter.... we have a lot of storms.

Since the roof came off I have become a bit paranoid..... so for me that's what would determine how often you check it.

Thinking about it couldn't the site manager keep an eye on yours for you? If my 2 can survive here your will be fine flower actually  Hope you don't find your checking it too often cus it ill be fine you know. Cris x
