I have just got a free place on an art appreciation course. No painting, just talking. I am really excited. I was very late applying because I have failed to get a place on any other course I have applied for and thought I would get turned down again. I just hoped it was the sort of subject other people wouldn't be interested in so I might stand a chance of getting a place. It is arranged by a carers charity. Not only will I be able to chat to Joan Lawson with some knowledge but I get to socialise with other carers too.

Oh dear, I hadn't better put any more of my paintings online or Elizabeth will be able to see (and comment) on all the good and bad points of my works.

Art Appreciation will enable you to 'look' at paintings, rather than just 'see' them. Always a good subject to take as it improves your critical abilities.

No worries Joseph I love to look at your paintings. It will just enable me to look at paintings differently. I am just pleased to get out of these 4 walls and do something different I will still be the same old me. I found the same with poetry. You need an expert to point things out to you.

That is great news, Elizabeth, and I think the course will be very interesting. It's something I would enjoy doing myself as my knowledge of art is not particularly extensive.

Joseph is right that it will help you to 'look' rather than just to 'see' paintings, and it's always interesting to know something about the different techniques used by different artists. However, I often trust my instincts when I look at art. Some artists trigger an immediate response in me, while others leave me cold, even though I can appreciate their expertise. It's all fascinating stuff though, so good luck with the course. Let me know how you get on with it.

I love the Impressionist painters like Van Gogh, Monet, and Cezanne. Starry Night by Van Gogh is one of my favourite paintings.

    Hi Barbara,

I went on a drawing course 4-5 years back and absolutely loved it. However my arthritis played up, I started first week by making tea for the others and carrying it to their table and ended up with them having to make the tea for me!
Thanks Joan. I do like these artists too and also the Dutch painter Vermeer(hope I spelt that right).

    Hi Elizabeth,

Well, what grand news! I am so pleased for you. I feel this is just the sort of interest you need at the moment. You sound very enthusiastic about it and that is soooo good to hear. Made my day!
